Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1969 First Edition Hardcover. (Winter 1968-69) A special double issue "Embracing a 46-page homage to Kenneth Patchen" with contributions by Allen Ginsberg, Jean Cocteau, Charles Bukowski, Thomas Merton, and others in the last of this hand set and printed avant-garde poetry and prose magazine by Loujon Press. Fragile handmade paper dust jacket has tattered edges and is split but both halves are in an archival envelope and included with the book. Original page of pressed flowers gathered by Gypsy Lou Webb from near Geronimo's gravesite is in perfect condition at the back of the book. Also included is an original Loujon Press order form for "Crucifix in a Deathhand" and a copy of the article by Dan Pavillard, entitled "Downpour Swamps Webb Printery," from the Tucson Daily Citizen about the flood that ruined the Webbs' desert workshop printery in Tucson in August 1968. Bumped corners to the cover; otherwise this photo-illustrated hardcover is in perfect condition and a beautiful example of bookmaking. Some sections show browning in keeping with the different types of paper used. There is also a tape ghost where the dust jacket was once taped down on the back inside cover. Pages are pristine and tight. Please see all images.

First Editions. Four octavo issues (23-26cm); Nos.1-3 bound in pictorial card wrappers; Nos.4/5 bound into one volume; photo-illustrated paper-covered boards, with a translucent, hand-made paper dustjacket, with titling and decorations letterpress printed in red on front panel; laid into the last issue is a sealed-by-hand still life of flora picked from a mile inside Geronimo's grave; 101; 112; 138; 200pp; illus. Issue No.2 has been signed and dated by Bukowski (7-4-67) at his contribution on p.7, with No.3 signed by John Webb on the front endpaper, next to a note asking "Help a little?" (relating to his veiled request for financial help on the verso of the front wrapper). Vol.1 shows light wear, a few faint creases, a 1" tear to lower rear wrapper, and a new ink price written over the $1 price at upper front wrapper; Very Good+. Vols.2-3 show light wear to spine ends, some faint creasing to overhanging corners, and subtle tanning to text edges; Near Fine. Final volume is Fine in a Fine jacket, with a holograph letter from John Webb to an original subscriber laid in. Complete set of this visually dazzling poetry magazine, an important vehicle for the work of Charles Bukowski, Kenneth Patchen, William S. Burroughs, Michael McClure, Henry Miller, LeRoi Jones and others. "Edited and published in New Orleans by Jon Edgar and Louise "Gypsy Lou" Webb, The Outsider was lavishly (one imagines even maniacally) produced by letterpress with a wide range of interesting and unusual materials. Yet in spite of its formal sophistication, it still manifests the indomitable spirit of the mimeo revolution by virtue of its devotion to such writers as Charles Bukowski and Kenneth Patchen, both of whom were recipients of the "Outsider of the Year" award" (Clay & Phillips, p.50). An attractive set. Dorbin C112-122, 152-153, 189-191, D20-22, E9-10.
