In this famous work de Ville (1596-1656, possibly 1657 or 1658) concentrates on basic designs as starting point for detailed examination of practical questions, showing how established principles have to be adapted to the practical exigencies of any actual site. He discusses in detail matters such as length of line defense, length of flanks, casemates, size of the bastions, etc. Doing this, he quotes continually from existing practice, acknowledging this as a a matter of fact. Noteworthy, de Ville himself produced the fine, clear illustrations for the book.
