Complete in four volumes. Limited to one thousand and three hundred copies of which this is number three hundred and forty. The works of Sir John Vanbrugh, an English architect, dramatist and herald, best known as the designer of Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard, who wrote two controversially outspoken Restoration comedies. Volume one contains an introduction, The Relapse, The Provok'd Wife, A Short Vindication of The Relapse and the Provok'd Wife from Immorality and Prophaneness. Volume two contains Aesop: Parts One and Two, The Pilgrim, The False Friend, and The Country House. Volume three contains The Confederacry, The Mistake, A Journey to London, and The Provok'd Husband. Volume four contains The Letters, with a portrait frontispiece and a double-paged plan of Castle Howard. The plays edited by Bonamy Dobrée, a British academic who was Professor of English Literature at the University of Leeds. The letters edited by Geoffrey Fairbank Webb, a British art historian, Slade Professor of Fine Art and head of the Monuments and Fine Arts section of the Allied Control Commission during the Second World War. In the original quarter blue cloth binding with blue paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines. Fading to the spines with the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Minor age toning to the endpapers. Very Good. book.
