Tinted lithograph. Image measures 4" x 6" This charming NYC view features an early depiction of "T. Smit's Vly" in lower Manhattan, at the intersections of Maiden Lane and Pearl St. near the present-day location of South St. Seaport. Translated as "Smith's Valley", the site was named for the city's first blacksmith shop, established by Cornelis Clopper. His shop became an important gathering place, as Long Island farmers passed through the property on their way to the city. The name was later anglicized to "Fly Market", and became an important outdoor market through the 18th and 19th centuries. By the time this print was published, it was New York's oldest market. Lithography by Sarony, Major, & Knapp for D.T. Valentine's "Manual of the Common Council of the City of New York" from 1861. unbound. Major & Knapp Ilustrador. Color lithograph. Image measures 4 7/16" x 6". Sheet measures 4 5/16" x 7 1/8". Mat measures 13"x 10". This color lithograph shows a view of Fort Fish, one of three forts built in Central Park to be used in the War of 1812. However, none of the three forts were needed in battle. In this scene, you can see two walkers strolling and a beautiful silhouette of the rolling hills of Manhattan in the background. Condition is very good. D.T. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and took it upon himself to compile the "Manuals," which he updated and published annually from 1841-1866. These manuals were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York, richly illustrated with maps, lithographs, and engravings.
