Unbound. Condición: Very Good. 74 p. Uncut, untrimmed. 32d Congress, 1st Session. [Ho. of Reps.] Miscellaneous, No. 4. A list of acts, resolutions, and memorials of the legislative assembly of the Territory of New Mexico, passed at a session begun and held on the second day of June, 1851, in obedience to the requirements of the act of Congress "to establish a territorial government for New Mexico." Following the Mexican-American War, from 1846-1848 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexico ceded its mostly unsettled northern holdings, today known as the American Southwest and California, to the United States of America. In the Compromise of 1850 Texas ceded its claims to the area lying east of the Rio Grande in exchange for ten million dollars. The United States acquired the southwestern boot heel of the state and southern Arizona below the Gila river in the mostly desert Gadsden Purchase of 1853. Congress admitted New Mexico as the 47th state in the Union on January 6, 1912. [Loc.: E 978.904]. Pamphlet.

Large folio sheet, 12 ½ x 15 ½ inches, folded. Madison County lies just south of Lexington. Toulmin, a native of England, emigrated to the United States as a young man and a dissenting Unitarian minister, and, helped by Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, was appointed to the Transylvania post; Toulmin published A Description of Kentucky in 1792, endorsed the Kentucky Resolutions as Secretary of State, and, after moving to the Mississippi Territory, was instrumental in establishing the legal code for Alabama, helping to write the state's first constitution. Manuscript material by Toulmin is rare in trade (only printed works by him listed on RareBookHub). Some light foxing verso, but very good.

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Original Document. Rare 1824 handwritten official document from Arkansas Territory signed by Secretary and Acting Governor Robert Crittenden, certifying a power of attorney for early Arkansas settlers concerning a land dispute in the state of Kentucky. One sheet, approximately 16 x 12.5 inches, folded to make 4 pages. 3 pages of handwritten text, with official seals of Pulaski County and "Arkansaw" Territory. Dated July 8, 1824. Also signed by 3rd Judicial Circuit Judge William Trimble and Pulaski County Circuit Court Clerk Thomas W. Newton, along with various attorneys Crittenden served as first Secretary of Arkansas Territory and as Acting Governor from 1819 to 1829. In 1819 Crittenden assumed power as Secretary and first Acting Governor of Arkansas Territory and named appointees to every state level office that could be filled by the governor, including treasurer, auditor and supreme court justices. When the first federally appointed governor, James Miller, arrived 6 months later in December, 1819, he discovered that the entire political base of the territory was controlled by Crittenden. Crittenden remained Secretary for the next 10 years and frequently filled-in as Acting Governor whenever the federally appointed governor was out of the state. He was the undisputed "boss" of Arkansas Territory for its first 10 years, although his popularity declined following a duel in which Crittenden shot and killed former political ally and Arkansas congressional delegate Henry W. Conway. Folded twice again for envelope storage. One short tear at fold. Overall, very good condition. Now protected in an archival quality mylar sleeve. An outstanding piece of early Arkansas history. Signed by Author(s).
