Summary: Despite the vast number of Americans who claim German ancestry, there is neither a major collection of 19th-Century German painting in the U. S. Nor have there been any exhibitions focusing on this subject. This volume aims to redress that balance. Although many will not be familiar with the great artists included in this volume, Caspar David Friedrich, Louis Corinth and Max Klinger are well-known names whose works form the core of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Germany. 1 Kg.

Condición: Good. - American novelist Robert Herrick's autograph penned on 4-1/2 inch high by 5 inch wide creamy white paper. Signed "Robert Herrick / Cuernavaca, Mexico, / 26 Feb. 1933". Folded for mailing, the paper is mounted from the verso onto gray stock from an autograph album. Good. The American novelist Robert Welch Herrick (1863-1938) was part of a newly emerging generation of American realists who addressed the turbulence and turmoil of industrialized society. Praised by William James, Herrick's work differed from Upton Sinclair's muckraking style to achieve its power from the perspective of melancholic fatalism. Appointed Secretary to the United States Virgin Islands in 1935, he found himself in the position of acting-Governor of the Islands when a political scandal forced Governor Paul Martin Pearson and his Lieutenant Governor to appear before the Senate. Pearson was forced to resign and, as his successor Lieutenant Governor Lawrence William Cramer was forced to remain in Washington until hearings were concluded, Herrick found himself presiding over the current legislative sessions.

Condición: Very good. - Typed letter on an approximately 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of cream-colored note paper. Signed "Mitchell Siporin". The top edge of the letter is lightly creased with a tiny chip out of the top left corner. Folded three times for mailing. There is a tiny tear to the left edge of 1 fold. Very good. Siporin replies to an invitation from Harold Rugg to speak at one of Rugg's lunchtime forums at Columbia University's Teachers College: "It would be a pleasure to take up your invitation to attend and address your All-College Luncheon Forum. The date I would prefer is March 31st. If that is no longer open, however, do suggest another time. As for the topic, may I communicate that to you after we've arrived at a satisfactory date?" Mitchell Siporin [1920-1976] was a Social Realist American painter. Beginning in the mid-1930s, Siporin worked as a painter for the Illinois Art Project through the Works Progress Administration. Together with Edward Millman he painted "the largest single mural awarded for a post office by the Section of Fine Arts" in the Central Post Office in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1951 he founded the Department of Fine Arts at Brandeis University. One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg [1886-1960] was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A civil engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940s.

1p, 8vo. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Folded once. The female recipient is not named. Although Raffaëlli was a realist painter, Degas invited him to participate in the Impressionist exhibitions of 1880 and 1881, and this bitterly divided the group, with Monet choosing not to exhibit.

Condición: Fine. - Over 110 words penned on his 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide light blue "Old Cove" stationery. Stephen Etnier writes to Ernest W. Watson, editor emeritus of American Artist magazine. Watson has written an article Etnier likes, and Etnier asks him to please send 122 copies of the magazine to persons he has included in a list, enclosing a check to cover the costs: "Will you kindly have the magazine sent out to the people on the enclosed list. This should give you an idea how highly I regard your article , & I certainly as you can see plan to take advantage of it." Signed "Stephen Etnier". [Neither the check nor the list of names which he mentions are here present]. Folded for mailing with staple holes at top left. There is minor creasing to the bottom left corner. Near fine. The American realist painter Stephen Morgan Etnier (1903-1984) favored industrial and working scenes mixing realism and luminism within his compositions. Etnier attended Yale Art School and Yale University but was dismissed for poor grades. He then entered Haverford College subsequently transferring to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In that 4 year span, he studied and apprenticed with Henry Breckinridge, John Carroll and Rockwell Kent. Etnier launched his career with a solo exhibition at New York's Dudensing Galleries in 1931, subsequently moving to the Milch Gallery. His work reflects his life and includes Pennsylvania street scenes and waterfronts of Haiti and the Bahamas. His 1938 mural "Waiting for the Mail" was installed at the U.S. Post Office in Spring Valley, NY and "Mail for New England" graced the wall of Boston's Everett Branch Post Office before being restored and reinstalled at Boston's Clarendon Street Post Office in 2010. In collaboration with the architect James Saunders, Etnier built "Old Cove" on land he purchased in South Harpswell, Maine in 1948. His living room offered him a view of the ocean through Mondrian-inspired window frames.
