Hardback. Condición: Very Good. First Edition Thus. 1842. First edition thus. [iii], 48pp. and a double-page map of Elgin and Nairn Shires. The Statistical Accounts of Scotland are a series of publications, related in subject matter though published at different times, covering life in Scotland in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The Old (or First) Statistical Account of Scotland was published between 1791 and 1799 by Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster. The New (or Second) Statistical Account of Scotland was published under the auspices of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland between 1834 and 1845. Launched in March 1834, the New Statistical Account was initially published in instalments or parts, normally four and sometimes six times a year. An instalment typically contained accounts from one or two counties and sometimes a map of a third one. A second or county series ran concurrently between 1841 and 1845, with the fifteen-volume series appearing in 1845. A Third Statistical Account of Scotland was published between 1951 and 1992. The volume for sale is the instalment covering Nairnshire of the New (or Second) Statistical Account. The book is bound in contemporary or possibly the original dark-green cloth covered boards. There is no titling or title label on the book. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining on the boards. The spine ends are bumped with a split of about 1/2" in the cloth on the top of the rear spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with browning and some foxing to the map at the start of the book and to the contents page, page 1 and the last page of the book. The title-page is browned and a name and date (1846) has been written on the front free endpaper.
