Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This assumed 1797 first edition in two volumes appears to have new boards, black leather spines with gilt print and end papers. Volume I has edgewear at the extremities and foxing on what probably were the end papers, frontispiece and title page. Foxing on the rest of the pages is light if even present. Volume II has the same wear at the extremities and a dark band, about 1 " at the top of the front cover. The original fep has a cut out at the top of 3"x1" and the previous owner's name and date, 1876. This book too has foxing on the same pages as Volume I. Considering its age, the good is good minus. Leather. Condición: Very Good Indeed. None Ilustrador. The eighth edition of John Hoole's translation of Torquato Tasso's epic poem, with engravings throughout. Bound in half calf, with five raised bands to the spine and marbled boards.Volume I of a two volume set.'Jerusalem Delivered' is an epic poem that was first published in Italian in 1581. The poem focuses on the First Crusade, led by Godfrey of Bouillon, in which Christians battled Muslims in order to take over Jerusalem. It's a romantic epic poem, written during the Italian Renaissance, and is largely mystified in it's telling of the real historical event, taking poetic liberties to make the event more exciting and readable. The poem was written by the Italian Torquato Tasso, who is best known for this poem. Translated by John Hoole, an English translator who was a personal friend of Samuel Johnson. He is also known for translating Ariosto's 'Orlando Furioso'. With a brief life of the author to the front. Illustrated with eleven plates. In a half calf binding, with marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the extremities and the odd mark. Light offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd handling mark or light spot. Very Good Indeed. book.
