Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some edge wear, creasing, chipping and short tears to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly rubbed, some slight overall yellowing and dust staining, slight lean, price clipped, small previous owner's inscription to ffep, internally clean and tight, overall a vg copy for its age and poor wartime paper. 192pp. An early story of the German Occupation of France. A German officer in the Brittany village of Rusquee is murdered, twenty hostages are destined to be shot if the murderer is not found within three days. The book centres around six people and their reactions to this murder and reprisal, Andre Galle formerly a Socialist minister whose idealist efforts at appeasement have virtually stripped him of all democratic vitality, Edouard Schneider whose opportunist traits have obtained him a high position in the Vichy government, Francoise, Galle's twenty five year old daughter, bewildered by her father's defeatism and Edouard's brutal cynicism, Blaise Galle's eighteen year old son, whose political vacillations make him an uncertain quantity, Simon Astley the young American painter who loves Francoise, a man who represents the intelligent and sensitive outsider caught up in the turmoil of international conflict, and Maurice, Galle's butler, a loyal member of the household though he was once convicted of murder. Out of the intrigue, the horror, the fear, and the tension that the search of the murderer of the German officers begets comes a love story at once tender and appealing. Grace Zaring Stone aka Ethel Vance (1891-1991), was an American novelist and short story writer, three of her novels were made into films. She used the pseudonym of Ethel Vance to write her 1939 anti Nazi thriller 'Escape' to avoid jeopardizing her daughter who was living in occupied Europe during the Second World War. Quite a scarce book.

1 1/2 pages each. 1 vols. 4to. 1 1/2 pages each. 1 vols. 4to. Responding to Hartley's letter enquiring about her literary career and the importance of her education on her writing. She writes "my experience has been fairly un-orthodox. Due to rather peculiar circumstances my formal education was stopped when I was fourteen years old. During that I time I studied music only absolrbed what ever else I could by a prodigious amount of reading and travel and by contacts." In the second letter, dictated due to poor eyesight, she expands on the above and then discusses her reasons for taking the pseudonym "Ethel Vance." At the time of the publication of "Escape" and just before America entered the Second World War, she and 9 others had been supoenaed by the Congressional Committee of Un-American Activities. As her daughter was married into an eminent Hungarian family and Hungary at that time was "practically a German Nazi Province" and not wanting any bad publicity to come out of the Congressional investigation to affect her daughter or her family she took the pseudonym. To Wesley Hartley, an educator and teacher. Folds, else fine.
