Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. pp. xxv, 188 + Frontis and map. 8vo. Original full cloth binding. Original priced dust jacket, rubbed and worn. Hardbound. Very good. On the 4th of July, 1791, a ten year-old boy, Oliver M. Spencer left his home to travel down river to Fort Washington, now Cincinnati, to celebrate the holiday. Returning home with another boy, they traveled first by canoe, and then on foot. After a short time, the party was set upon by Indians and Spencer soon found himself a captive. For several days, he was taken across country but treated with some kindness. After an attempted escape, he was recaptured when tempted by a patch of raspberries. On the 13th of July, the group reached the junction of the Auglaize and Maumee rivers_the site of Fort Defiance_where he was adopted into an Indian Family. He was later ransomed and ultimately reached relatives in New Jersey and finally his family in Columbia, on the Ohio River. The story was first told forty years after the events, in a piece written for publication in the Western Christian Advocate in 1834. Spencer had become a Methodist Episcopal minister and lived in Cincinnati. LOC W17 0.0.

Bound in the original green cloth, which is still bright (without any of the usual fading). SEE PHOTOS. Sharp corners. Hinges are perfect. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. The fourth and apparently final issue of this short-lived magazine in book form. Hardcover. It was edited by Jamaican-born Walter Adolphe Roberts (1886-1962), who also contributed to this issue a short editorial, a play (THE QUEEN'S TENT, pp. 62-80), an article (AL SMITH FOR PRESIDENT), and a book review. This issue is filled with short stories, poetry, and essays. Of special interest is Adolphe de Castro's 17-page essay, AMBROSE BIERCE AS HE REALLY WAS, AN INTIMATE ACCOUNT OF HIS LIFE AND DEATH. Adolphe de Castro met Bierce in 1886, became his protégé, and "wrote" a novella in collaboration with him. The article published here is the basis for the controversial explanation of Bierce's 1913 disappearance into revolution-torn Mexico. (de Castro claimed that Bierce had been shot by soldiers under orders from Pancho Villa). Other contributors to this issue are George Sterling (another Ambrose Bierce protégé), David Warren Ryder, Eleanor Ranos, Helene Mullins, Isa Glenn, H. M. Hamilton, S. Bert Cooksley, Lillian White Spencer, Louise Rice, Solita Solano, William Salisbury, Halpin O'Reilly Gilbert, Arthur Robson, Marcia Nardi, Eleanor de Nardi, Cary Ranck, Walter Haviland, Louis C. Fisher, Charles Divine, Robert Napier, Pauline de Silva, Eva Balfour, etc. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No jacket. 8vo. 191pp.
