Condición: fine. New York 1847 first edition (both books are 1841 first edition). Martin. Hardcover 4to. Two books bound as one. (1) Smillie and Cleaveland's Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. Pictorial plate map as frontispiece and an engraving on tp; 91p. and 19 plates.(2) Smillie and Walter's Mount Auburn Cemetary in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Pictorial plate map as frontispiece and engraving on tp. 119p. 19 plates. Both books begin with a fullpage pictorial map and an engraving on the titlepage map and 19 fullpage steel engravings. Plates are finely engraving, some quite stunning , on heavy stock. Some plates have light foiixng most plates just have none or light foxing in margins. All have original tissue guards. 3/4 brown leather with marbled boards. Good, end papers foxed, one outer hinge cracking but still holding on well, one inner hinge lightly tender but paper has not yet cracked; binding secure . No owner marks. Full leather, elaborate blindstamping and gilt decorations; all edges gilt; tissue-guarded steel engravings, including 2 full page cemetery maps. Corners rubbed and bumped, loss to lower spine, which is nearly detached at rear exterior hinge, leather of rear board buckled; front interior hinge detached, holding by exterior hinge; penciled writing to ffe; significant areas of dampstaining to pp. 18 to 88; rear hinge holding by 1 binding string. A poor copy. Still useful example of this early work detailing the rural cemetery movement in America, focusing on 2: Green-Wood in New York and Mount Auburn in Massachusetts.

Both illustrated "in Highly Finished Line Engraving, From Drawings Taken on the Spot" by James Smillie. Green-Wood, with Descriptive Notices by Nehemiah Cleaveland was published in 1847, vii +108 pages of text . Frontispiece consists of an engraved map of Green-Wood plus four vignettes. Vignette on engraved title page, second title page, plus twenty other engravings, and in addition, two plates of patterns of railings. The second work, Mount Auburn, was published in 1851, and has Descriptive Notices by Cornelia W. Walter. 119 pages of text. Frontispiece consists of engraved map of Mount Auburn, plus one vignette, opposite engraved title page with another vignette, followed by a second title page. With seventeen additional engravings interspersed between pages of text, plus three pages of engravings of patterned railings. Full leather with gilt border on front and rear covers, four raised bands on spine with title of "Green - Wood" (only) and "Illustrated "in gilt on spine. All edges gilt. Covers scuffed, spine sunned. Some foxing throughout. Engravings have tissue guards. Located in Brookln, and founded in 1838 as a rural cemetery, Green-Wood is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Mount Auburn, located on the borderline between Cambridge and Watertown, Massachusetts, was the first rural or garden cemetery in the United States. 102416A.
