First edition of this delightful pocket guide by the "great Syriac scholar" Gabriel Sionita (Jibrail al-Sahyuni) (Wilkinson, p. 190). It is an interesting compilation that includes accounts of Mecca, Medina, Aleppo, Damascus, Baghdad, Jerusalem and Bokhara; the "Historia Arabum" (pp. 259-88) is by Wolfgang Drechsler and the work closes with an appendix on the Muslim calendar. Sionita (c. 1577-1648), a Maronite, was born in northern Lebanon and taught oriental languages at Rome and Venice before moving to Paris as Professor of Arabic, where he contributed to the production of a polyglot Bible, in particular, "to deal with the Syriac and Arabic texts" (Thomas & Chesworth, p. 722). The English orientalist Edward Pococke, who similarly worked on a polyglot Bible, that of Bishop Brian Walton (London, 1657), encountered Sionita on his way back from Constantinople. Gay 3452; David Thomas and John Chesworth, eds., Christian-Muslim Relations: A Biographical History, Volume 9. Western and Southern Europe (1600-1700), 2017; Robert J. Wilkinson, Orientalism, Aramaic and Kabbalah in the Catholic Reformation: The First Printing of the Syriac New Testament, 2007. Sextodecimo in eights (104 x 53 mm). Contemporary vellum, overlapping edges, early manuscript title to spine. Engraved pictorial title page showing a Turk with one arm resting on a cartouche containing the title. Discreet printed book label of Frances and Gleb Popoff of Monterey, California. Occasional light toning. A very good copy.
