Scarce ORIGINAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME for the FILM version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, which was screened at the Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne, in 1948. A Two Cities Film. A J. Arthur Rank Enterprise. Presented by Laurence Olivier. Starring Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Peter Cushing, Basil Sydney, and others. Contains details on Hamlet (reprinted from Life magazine), list of cast, full-page colour photograph of Laurence Olivier, plus rear page with The Great Soliloquay from Hamlet. Thin single folded sheet to create four pages. The first Australian screening of Hamlet was screened on 11 June 1948 with the Oliviers in attendance. Though there is no indication, this copy from the library of Australian Ambassador Lloyd D. Thomson. Diplomat Lloyd Thomson (1919-2015) was the first Australian Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican) (1973-74, 1980-83), & resident outside Italy at other Australian diplomatic posts, including the Netherlands (The Hague), Ireland (Dublin), the UN in Switzerland (Geneva), plus Head of Mission with the Department of Foreign Affairs, along with other diplomatic posts. Lloyd Thomson was also involved in the theatre as a playwright, actor & producer, notably co-writing the Australian musical The Sentimental Bloke (to the poetry of C.J. Dennis). Slight handling wear, mild spotting to lower edge, otherwise a nice clean copy. 4pp. RARE. SB-14.
