Hardcover. Condición: VG+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: VG+. Photos, Art, Maps Ilustrador. 1st. This history of the Ashburton town and the surrounding district begins with the arrival of the first immigrant settlers in 1853, following the events and developments of the area for the next 100 years, traversing the obstacles and difficulties faced by the pioneers through two world wars, several episodes of economic uncertainty, including the Great Depression of the 1920' and '30s, but overcoming all adversities in the knowledge that the area's agricultural investment would prevail. The author's history of Ashburton runs chronologically with four sections covering Settlement 1853 to 1878, County and Borough Through the Depression, 1878 to 1903, Greater Farming Prosperity 1903 to 1928 and Through Slump and War 1928 to 1953. In these chapters the author records important advances in local administration, infrastructure, civic, community and social amenities, sport and recreation and the personalities among the early settlers, and those who followed them, to create an impressive record of this mid-Canterbury town and locality, which is recognised to be the province's leading agricultural county. A significant geographical aspect of this area is that its boundries are the foothills of the Southern Alps in the west, the coast in the east and the Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers, respectively north and south. First edition of 1972. printed by Caxton Press for the Ashburton Borough and County councils, 480 pages, including references, bibliography and index Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+. neat ink gift inscription top FFEP, text block otherwise excellent, liberally illustrated with b/w photos/art, (more than 70 major images plus portraits) in three collations, section with locality maps and plans at back, some line drawings and several maps in text.
