Brown cloth with darker brown letters on the front cover and the spine. Just touches of wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, top and bottom of spine show signs of wanting to fray, covers ever so lightly soiled, book ever so slightly bowed, occasional pencil marks, else near fine to fine with no other internal markings. No dust jacket. Just charming illustrations in this "first reading book"!.

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - One of the first illustrators to work for the satirical magazine "Jugend", Schmidhammer soon became a popular illustrator of childrens' books, frequently cooperating with the publishing house Joseph Scholz in Mainz. He created propagandistic picture books during the First World War and co-designed costumes for an 1896 production of "Der Ring des Nibelungen". - Some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
