First edition in English. xvi, 334pp, [4]. With. a half-tile, 18 engraved folding plates, a leaf of errata, and a terminal leaf of publisher's advertisements. Contemporary gilt-ruled calf, marbled paper boards, black calf lettering-piece. Extremities rubbed. Plate margins a trifle browned and dusty. Recently dispersed from the Cottlesloe Military Library 'probably the most extensive private collection of early printed books focused on military matters', with the bookplate of Thomas Francis Fremantle, 3rd Lord Cottesloe (1862-1965) to FEP. The first edition in English of Prussian army officer Friedrich Christoph von Saldern's (1719-1785) Taktik der infanterie (Dresden, 1784), translated by military educationist Isaac Landmann (1741-1826). Having served with distinction during the Seven Years' War (1756-63), and secured through rapid battlefield promotion the rank of major-general, von Saldern, thanks to his tactical sagacity, was appointed Inspector-General for the Magdeburg Infantry Inspection, a position he held from 1763 until his death. His primary concern was in constructing fundamental principles for infantry movement to serve as a foundation for performing complicated manoeuvres; he was, however, given to concocting such advanced and involved manoeuvres that the average soldier would be hard-pressed to complete on the parade ground, let alone in the heat of battle. First edition in English following the Dresden edition of 1784, fairly uncommon just 10 locations on Library Hub, a similar number of additional records on WorldCat. Saldern's handbook was widely adopted in the British Army; "An Inspector-General in the Prussian service from 1763 to 1785, where he enjoyed considerable reputation as a tactician, von Saldern was chiefly concerned with establishing certain basic, technical principles of foot movement which, when learned, would serve as the basis for performing the most complicated manoeuvres with speed and precision. In his basic principles he was to be followed closely by Fawcett, when he framed the 1786 Regulations, and later by Dundas in his celebrated drillbook. At this basic level Saldern wrought well; but unfortunately for his reputation he was given to constructing the most involved of advanced manoeuvres, difficult enough to perform on the Potsdam parade-grounds and impossible in any battlefield situation; these appeared large in the Elements of Tacticks, dimming the excellent metal upon which they were based" (Houlding, Fit for Service, pp.235-6). Attractive copy in unrestored contemporary condition. Octavo (213 x 128 mm). Contemporary lightly sprinkled calf, red morocco label, flat spine, compartments formed by a broad gilt fillet framed by dotted rolls, gilt milling to the board edges, page edges sprinkled red. Eighteen folding plates, complete with half-title and errata. A little rubbed, front joint cracked to the cords but holding, corners bumped, mild paste-action browning to the endpapers, bookplate neatly removed from the front pastedown text variably browned and with some offset, two plates a little misfolded and consequently standing proud and slightly creased at the fore-edge, a very good copy.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, 18 folding engraved plates, slightly browned in places, a few spots, pp. xvi (including half-title), 334, [1, Errata], 8vo, contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, corners worn, good. 'Von Saldern (1719-85) was an outstanding Prussian tactician who later turned to writing, von Saldern was of great importance in spreading Prussian tactical ideas through the armies of late eighteenth-century Europe. Having entered the army of Frederick William I (1713-40) as an ensign, at the age of sixteen, he first attracted royal attention on account of his great height. Subsequently, his distinguished service during the Seven Years' War (1756-63) secured rapid promotion to the rank of major-general. Frederick the Great considered his tactical ability to be without equal and, from 1763 until his death in 1785, he served as Inspector-General for the Magdeburg Infantry Inspection. His published thoughts on tactics Taktik der Infanterie (1784) and Taktische Grundsätz (1786) though in part criticized as impractical, were soon translated (into English in 1787). In Britain, his evolutions were copied directly by some regiments and his thoughts were influential in the formulation of the British tactical Rules and Regulations of 1792, the adoption of which was seen by many contemporaries as finally making complete the Prussianization of the British service' (Blackwell Reference Online). (ESTC T113849, recording just 2 copies in N. America, Newberry and Toronto).
