2002. N & M Press reprint (first pub 1819). HB. xxviii + 324pp This book first appeared with the unweildy title â Letters from Portugal, Spain and France during The Memorable Campaigns of 1811,1812, & 1813; and from Belgium and France in the Year 1815. By a British Officer.â James Hopeâ s career began in July 1809 as a Volunteer in the 2nd Battalion the 92nd Highland Regiment of Foot, in which he served in the Walcheren expedition to Holland. In September 1811, now an officer, he was sent to Portugal with a draft for the 1st Battalion with instructions he should return to the 2nd Battalion once he had completed his task. The 1st Battalion, however, was short of officers and kept him temporarily; as a result he served for over two years in the Peninsula. He was present at several battles - Arroyo del Molino (Arroyo Molinos) in October 1811 where the French lost some 2,000 to the British 100; Almarez (May 1812), Alba de Torres (Nov 1812), Vittoria (June 1813), the Maya Pass (July 1813) where he was wounded in the head, and finally Nivelle (November 1813). The following month he was at last released from service with the 1st Battalion and went home to rejoin the 2nd Battalion. In 1814 the battalion was disbanded and Hope went back to the 1st Battalion which he accompanied to Flanders in May 1815. He fought at Quatre Bras and Waterloo and both these battles are vividly described, especially the battlefield scenes after Waterloo.Hopeâ s record is contained in a series of letters to a fellow officer, and as they were written very shortly after the events they describe, they create an immediate impact. There is a lengthy, comprehensive and instructive introduction by Stanley Monick, the editor. As well as discussing the function of letters in the early 19th century, Monick analyse the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns. Monick has also compiled a useful index, which are usually lacking in the originals and reprints of publications of this nature. A must for Napoleonic specialists.

2001 reprint + index. 2 vols 390pp and 388pp B&W platesPublished Price £22 Eye-witness accounts and memoirs of the Peninsula War by ordinary soldiers who took part in the campaign have deservedly acquired a high reputation for the vivid picture they give us of life in Wellingtonâ s army and their insights into a brutal and merciless war. These two volumes of â Peninsular Sketchesâ are the cream of the genre. Collected by William Hamilton Maxwell, a colourful and well-regarded Anglo-Irish military historian and writer who may well have served in the Peninsular himself, they are now published in a modern revised edition. Volume One of this smart and conveniently sized re-print includes a lengthy and learned introduction by the modern military historian Stanley Monick, which comprises a biography of Maxwell himself, an outline of the course of the war, as well as well-informed notes and a commentary on the sketches themselves. Both volumes also have full indexes compiled by Dr Monick.Volume One of the sketches give us raw material from such events as the storming of the fortress of Ciudad Roderigo and the sack of Badajoz as well as the great victory at Salamanca. Volume Two follows the course of the war from the capture of Madrid, Wellingtonâ s victory at Vittoria and the British armyâ s passage over the Pyrenees and its final triumphal march to Toulouse.Long out of print, and a rare collectorâ s item in the antiquarian book market; these fascinating volumes are now within the price range of every enthusiast of the Peninsular War and Napoleonic warfare generally. For the serious student of the subject these are not to be missed.

HB 200pp 2001 As the title suggests, these are the memoirs of a veteran of the bloody Waterloo campaign, originally written as letters and privately printed over fifty years later, for the benefit of Pattisonâ s grandchildren. Aged over eighty, writing from the tranquillity of his home, he recalls the horrors of the battlefield which he describes so vividly: â At this juncture Lieutenant Arthur Gore of the Grenadier Company, who was standing close by me.was hit by a cannon ball, and his brains bespattered the shakos of the officers near him.â Frederick Hope Pattison purchased an ensignâ s commission in 1810 and joined the 33rd Regiment of Foot in Seringapatam, India. In 1853 the regiment was given the title Duke of Wellingtonâ s, the only regiment in the British Army named after a non-royal person. (The regiment still exists today, one of the four English and Welsh line regiments to have survived the changes inflicted on them since the Second World War). After Waterloo, Pattison served on till the end of 1821 when he went on half-pay, as a captain, and his final appearance in the Army List was in 1830.Although only five letters written by Pattison form the basis of this book, Dr Stanley Monick, the editor, has amplified them with analysis, comment, historical and social background and biographical details of persons mentioned in the text. He has divided the book into three parts: Introduction and editorial approach; the Letters and appendices; and Notes and Index. In his introduction Monick discusses the letter as a popular literary device and its importance as a vehicle for argument, instruction, reminiscence, biography etc and analyses Pattisonâ s letters in that context. He then provides the military/historical background by discussing in turn the social character of Wellingtonâ s army, its organization, infantry tactics and drill. Then come the letters themselves with editorial comment on each. Part III, the bulk of the book (some 120 pages including a twenty-nine page index), is taken up with explanations of the footnotes in the letters in minute detail by both the author and the editor, who also comments on Pattisonâ s notes.

2001. HB. 227pp The author of this work was born on the Isle of Wight about 1792. He fought at Waterloo as a Sergeant Major in the 7th Hussars, 5th Cavalry Brigade, and during the battle had his horse killed under him. After leaving the army he settled in Mont St Jean and became one oif the first guides to the battlefield in 1835; he also founded a Waterloo museum. He died in June 1849 and was buried on the battlefield in the garden at Hougoumont; later his remains were re-interred in the crypt of the Waterloo Memorial in Evere Cemetery on the outskirts of Brussels along with the remains of sixteen officers. The editor, Dr Stanley Monick, has arranged this book as he did Horror Recollected in Tranquillity, dividing it into three parts - Part A Introduction, Part B Cottonâ s account, Part C Notes and finally a comprehensive 32-page index. The Introduction is a major work in itself, extending to 100 pages or nearly half the book. After reviewing Cottonâ s narrative which Monick rates as one of the most popular histories of the Waterloo campaign, noting that no less than 13 editions were produced between its first (1846) publication and its last (1913), he sets out in detail the military/historical background beginning with a description of all the armies involved - British, Dutch-Belgian, French and Prussian. This is followed by a discussion on tactics - infantry, artillery (including the order of battle of the allied artillery) and cavalry. There is a section on weapons - artillery, muskets, carbines and swords - and ammunition, and finally biographical outlines of more than fifty commanders and senior officers from both sides who feature in the narrative.Cottonâ s account of the battle takes up 57 pages and is a general history rather than personal reminiscence. Although much involved in the fighting, Cotton makes little reference to his own experiences. His work was warmly received when it first appeared and is a well-written and graphic account. There are many footnotes: both in the original text and those added by the editor which are explained in detail in Part C. This book belongs on the shelves of anyone interested in the Napoleonic wars and in the structure of the armies of the time - especially the British.
