Manuscrito
4to. 2 pp. on bifolium. To the alderman Matthew Wood in Westminster, written the day after the opening of "New" London Bridge, with thanks for a medal presented and eager for information about a balloon navigation: "I beg to return you my warmest thanks for the medal you were so kind as to present me yesterday, on the occasion of the opening the New London Bridge, believe me dear Sir the sight has made such an impression on me as will never be effaced, and should time or distance weaken the recollection, the sight of your invaluable present will restore the delight of yesterday to my mind. I feel anxious to know the fate of the balloon and the aeronauts, I hope that neither the gentlemen or the balloon itself are the worse for ascension. And you would add greatly to the favours you have already conferred on me, by informing me, by letter, whether they landed in safety & were pleased with their excursion [.]". - As an envoy of the Mughal Emperor, Ram Mohan Roy undertook a trip to England in 1831. His mission was successful, but he succumbed to illness in England in 1833. The hot-air balloon ascending over New London Bridge upon its inauguration was piloted by British balloonist Charles Green (cf. Bell's Weekly Messenger, No. 1846, 21 August 1831). "His Majesty and the Queen walked in state ceremony over the Bridge to the Southwark side, and a large balloon ascended. They distributed medals to the company as they returned to the pavilion erected for the dinner, at the London end of the Bridge [.]" (Civilized Society, 1851, p. 136). - With collector's note to counter-leaf; tears from opening the letter; residue of a seal. Slight brownstaining.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. THE PRECEPTS OF JESUS - The Guide to Peace and Happiness, Extracted from the Books of the New Testament Ascribed to the Four Evangelists. - To Which Are Added, The First, Second, and Final Appeal to the Christian Public in Reply to the Observations of Dr. Marshman, of Serampore. BY RAMMOHUN ROY (aka Raja Ram Mohan Roy), of CALCUTTA. Published by B. Bates, New York, 1825. First American Edition. Hardcovers, paper spine title label, 6x9.5 inches (15x23.5 cm), xix + 318 pages. LAID-IN is a HANDWRITTEN LETTER, SIGNED and DATED by RAMMOHUN ROY, written on both sides of a 5x8 inch (12.5x20 cm) piece of paper. The letter reads: "My dear Sir / Nothing can give me greater pleasure than receiving your note accompanied by two other letters and a parcel of books from America and I beg you will accept my sincere thanks for your kind remembrance of me and for your kind wishes for my health and that of my son. / I hope I shall be able to do myself the pleasure of calling upon you and spending a few happy hours in conversation with you. / With my best compliments to Mr. Foster I remain / Yours very Sincerely / Rammohun Roy / May 2nd 1829." ASSOCIATIONS in the LETTER and the BOOK: MR. FOSTER, to whom the LETTER is written, is most certainly REV. JOHN FOSTER, the noted BRITISH ESSAYIST and MINISTER who, in his later years lived in Stapleton, Gloucestershire, making him a neighbor of Raja Ram Mohun Roy who, in his later years, lived at Stapleton Grove. John Foster and the Raja became close and had many discussions. John Foster, along with Rammohun Roy, became involved in the Serampore missionaries controversy. John Foster was one of a small group of mourners invited to the private funeral of Rammohun Roy that took place on October 18, 1933, on the grounds of Stapleton Grove. (See "John Foster Essayist" on Wikipedia.) The BOOK has the ownership SIGNATURE of SAMUEL JOSEPH MAY on the rear pastedown, and that of his son JOSEPH MAY on the front pastedown. Samuel Joseph May's signature is florid, bright and clear, Joseph May's signature on the front pastedown has been inked out but is still legible. SAMUEL JOSEPH MAY was an important American Abolitionist, Women's Rights Advocate, Supporter of Universal Education, and Unitarian Minister. In America he championed many of the same causes that Rammohun Roy advocated. (See "Samuel Joseph May" on Wikipedia.) CONDITION: The LETTER is in VERY GOOD condition, it has a couple horizontal folds and a couple associated folds likely made to fit it into an envelope (no envelope is present), there are remnants of several pea-size hinge tags on the rear left margin where the book was hinged onto the first "Preface" page (the hinges look like they could be removed with care but I have left them as is), overall the letter is solid and clean with writing that is bright and clear. The BOOK is in FAIR condition, the covers are disbound but present, the boards have scrapes and are worn through along the edges, the spine cloth covering is toned, peeling and worn at the ends, and has scrapes and creases, the title label is chipped and worn; internally, the front pastedown has white paper remnants likely from a removed bookplate and the signature of Joseph May that has been inked out but is still legible, there is a loose and edge chipped front and rear blank endpaper, the frontispiece and title pages are coming loose at the top 2 inches but holding, the pages have lightly toned, many sections are cracked at the binding but not split (i.e. the text block is shaky but holding), there are scattered pencil margin check marks and lines noting certain passages, and a few relevant pencil margin notes (perhaps by Joseph May?), overall the text is complete with printing that is bright, clean, clear and legible throughout. RAMMOHUN ROY HANDWRITTEN LETTER in a nearly impossible to find 1825 edition of his book PRECEPTS OF JESUS together with important ASSOCIATIONS. Inscribed by Author(s).

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Two pages with integral blank leaf. Letter is sent from 48 Bedford Square (the residence of Joseph Hare, with whom Roy was staying) and is dated May 7th 1832. Roy is trying to arrange a meeting with a Rev Aspland, and writes, 'I beg to name Friday the 18th on which I am happy to find myself disengaged and hope to have the pleasure of meeting you at your friends, Mr Ebenezer Johnstone's, at 4 o'clock if perfectly convenient to him'. He signs off 'I remain with great respect, Yours most obediently, Rammohun Roy.' On the intergral blank leaf a previous owner has written that he acquired the letter on 7th March 1838 from his young friends the Misses Johnstones. Paper is watermarked J Whatman, Turkey Mill 1831. Together with a small lithograph of Roy with facsimile signature, and a cut signature of Roy's son, Raja Ram Roy, dated July 11th 1837.***Roy was an Indian religious, social and educational reformer who has been called the father of modern India. Roy came to London in April 1831 with a party that included his foster-son Rajaram Roy. He stayed at 48 Bedford Square, the home of his host Joseph Hare. The visit had been arranged by David Hare, Joseph's brother, who had extensive business interests in Calcutta. In September 1833 on a visit to Bristol, Roy was suddenly taken ill and died. Joseph Hare lived at no. 48 Bedford Square from 1824 until about 1841. In 1849 the building became Bedford College and since 2017 has been home to the old-established firm of rare book dealers Maggs Bros. Letters by Rammohun Roy rarely come onto the market. We can only trace one autograph and one letter at auction in the last 40 years.
