"From My Thirty Years Backstairs at the White House: WILSON: "The President was really a frustrated actor. Mama would find him making faces, clowning, and doing a jig with his daughters, or taking a very serious part in a play, and speaking with one arm raised dramatically." COOLIDGE: "As a trick on the staff, he would press all the buttons on his desk and chuckle as they popped into his office from all directions. 'Just wanted to see if everybody's working,' he would say." HOOVER: "The President hardly took enough time to eat, so anxious was he to get back to work. All the servants made bets as to how long it would take him to eat. He could eat a full-course dinner in eight minutes flat. They would return to the kitchen and say, 'Nine minutes, fifteen seconds.' " ROOSEVELT: "He was strangely economy-minded when it came to running the White House. he would send notes to Mrs. Roosevelt, telling her about the bills and why he couldn't afford them. In one such note, he told her what amount he could afford to pay each month, and requested that she stick to the budget." TRUMAN: "I never saw President Truman more excited than when Blair House called him to tell him Bess was sick .Nothing in the world could upset him more than a crisis or setback that concerned his womenfolk." EISENHOWER: "He seemed to be clannish and to stick to just a few friends. 'Ike was really sort of an introvert, who liked to get away from people, and enjoyed painting because it was a solitary occupation." - from the rear outer jacket. "There's no place like the White House," declares Lillian Rogers Parks, who served as a maid and seamstress at the Executive Mansion for thirty years before her recent retirement. Her mother, who had been Number One White House Maid, also worked there for thirty years (ten of their combined years of service overlapped), beginning with the Taft administration; and before her death in 1953, "Maggie" Rogers encouraged her daughter to write down their favorite White House stories. The result is the most lively and entertaining collection of memoirs to come along in years. Through the sharp eye of her sewing needle, Mrs. Parks sizes up the First Ladies from Mrs. Taft to Mrs. Eisenhower as hostesses, fashion plates, collectors, interior decorators and managers of the world's most famous mansion. The author examines everything pertaining to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, from the various rooms and their collections to the still active ghosts of Abe Lincoln, Dolley Madison, and Abigail Adams. She details the more amusing headaches of the Secret Service in dealing with cranks, crackpots and would-be assassins, and describes some of the more extraordinary gifts that the Presidnets have received. Historians will be interested in the White House version of such famous feuds as Eisenhower versus Truman and Dolly Gann versus Alice Roosevelt Longworth. And Mrs. Parks also recounts those tragedies and scandals that have always plagued the First Families. My Thirty Years Backstairs at the White House comprises a half century of priceless anecdotes of the Presidents and First Ladies; their friends, relatives and famous visitors; their children and pets, and their more memorable retainers and guardians." - from the inner front jacket flap.
