NF/VG+. First Edition but no AEG. Original ivory boards with bevelled edges, dramatic typography with art nouveau illustration of an Indian chief on horseback reproduced in copper colored ink. Design repeated on title page. Introduction by George S. Rowe. Fifteen plates, each with a parchment tissue guard with title of illustration printed in red. Plates depict battle scenes between the U.S. cavalry and Plains Indians. Cover and spine clean and edges and corners without wear, very bright and tight and clean with no prior owner marks. Some of the tissue guards have a vertical wave or two as if the paper had shrunk and then expanded, and some of the plates have a hint of 'wave' opposite those of the tissue guard, but this is nevertheless an exceptionally nice near original copy of a book rarely found in such nice condition. Even more special is the presence of the original gift box in which the book was sold, the cover of which repeats in B&W the front cover of the book. The top of the box is complete, 2 sides are complete and the other 2 80% complete, with the corners solid (in part due to some recent professional strengthening). The box bottom is 100% complete including portions of the paper overlay that once covered the book, with the corners solid and with some recent strengthening. The fifteen plates first appeared in General Nelson A. Miles book PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS AND OBSERVATIONS also published by The Werner Co. (1896). Dykes #327, Howes R206. A nice collectable copy of an already uncommon book, but one even scarcer in such nice condition in the original box.
