Hardback. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. Leo Rawlings Ilustrador. Private Publication. AND THE DAWN CAME UP LIKE THUNDER Leo Rawlings Foreword by Lord Mountbatten of Burma. Rawlings, Chapman Publications, 1972 First edition 160pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in FINE condition in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper. Leo Rawlings, a gunner/signaller with 137th Field Regiment Royal Artillery, was captured by the Japanese after the Fall of Singapore and spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war. Despite the fact that he, along with his fellow prisoners, suffered the degrading and naked cruelty inflicted upon him at the hands of his captors he was able complete over one hundred paintings and drawings of the conditions that the prisoners were subjected to. Using artist's materials consisting of natural herbs and plants for colours, his brushes were made from his own hair. The result was an unforgettable and sometimes shocking record of man's inhumainity towards his fellow man. This body of work has been used to illustrate books such as Lord Russell of Liverpool's 'The Knights of Bushido' and many are in the collection of the Imperial War Museum and the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum. This is an important book that should be read by all those with an interest in the war against Japan. ref N6.
