Condición: Very good. - Over 100 words penned by Thomas George Horn on his 9-1/2 inch high by 6-1/8 inch wide "T.G. Horn, M.D." stationery. In his letter addressed to the American lecture manager Major James B. Pond, Horn is sure that the medicine "will correct the kidney trouble and also the prostetic [sic] trouble. The Rectal trouble will take time . I can see no benefit to be derived from the analysis of the water. Stick closely to your medicine & local application to the rectum." He goes on to relate that his cold is somewhat better and mentions that they "enjoyed Mr. Crawford & his lecture very much." Signed "T.G. Horn" in the cramped space remaining along the bottom edge. Folded for mailing. Very good. In 1899, Dr. Thomas George Horn (1832-1905) discovered a spring in Colorado Springs. The water was analyzed and found to be similar to springs in Virginia. These were found to have good results for urinary problems and dyspepsia. Horn advertised the water as a solvent for uric acid. He claimed it was a cure for kidney troubles and diabetes, sciatica, rheumatism, and gout. He opened the Colorado Springs Sanatarium in 1901 which he eventually sold to the Pikes Peak Mineral Water Co. F. Marion Crawford, whose lecture Horn mentions, lectured in Colorado Springs on March 15th of that year. Pond was with him.

Deafness, if the Drum of the Ear be not injured ; likewise, those continual Singing Noises in the ear removed. Dr. Lamb- residence : - 48. Oldfield Road, Manchester. No place of publication, publisher or date of publication. [ Manchester : ? Late 19th early 20th century. ] Broadside. 420mm x 284mm. Printed black on white paper, on one side only. Slightly soiled, sometime folded, few very small holes, chipped along the top edge. Doctor Lamb was not only a " Herbal Remedy " but seemingly " . is the only man in Great Britain who cures all cases of Scurvy, Abscesses, Sore Legs, & c; without the use of ointment or any outward application ". 18 testimonials testify to the success in curing " Paralysis", "Deafness ", " Sore Eyelids ", and " Rheumatism " etc; etc. The late nineteenth century witnessed the burgeoning of quack advertising for cures and nostrums. Newspapers carried such adverts, the growth of popular literature, street hawkers and peddllers also did much to create a significant industry. The majority of the public were poor and could not afford professional medicine, they were also ignorant enough to be seduced by this quack advertising and readily bought into it. This advertising was uncontrolled until the beginning of the 20th century, when the government brought power to bear, especially, on the press, to restrict it, however this did not impact on this sort of street advertising. This is an unusual example of quack advertising in that it is printed on a Broadsheet instead of a Handbill which the majority would have been.
