When in 1756 Admiral John Byng was sent with a inadequate fleet to prevent the French occupation of Minorca it was a case of too little, too late. His expedition was unsuccessful and a scapegoat was necessary. He was imprisoned, court martialled and in 1758 exceuted. In a preface note Dudley Pope, a distinguished naval historian and novalist, said the trial and execution was "one of the most cold-blooded and cynical acts of judicial murder in all British history." His excellent book covers all aspects for the reasons why this tragedy occurred. It is a masterpiece of historical resaerch. 375 pages including 5 appendices, extensives, notes, bibliography and index. 21 b/w illus, map. 7 battle diagrams. Hard covers and text block as new, with few marks top page edges, map DJ likewise with tiny creases top edges.First published 1962.
