Perse won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1960, and he was well known under his given name of Alexis Leger. One of France's most distinguished diplomats. Ces poèmes ont paru pour la première fois en mars 1942 dans la revue américaine "Poetry". Dans la même année parurent encore quatre éditions séparées à tirage limité : 1) en mai par les Cahiers du Sud (200 ex.), 2) en juillet par les Lettres Françaises, Buenos Aires (333 ex.), 3) en octobre par les Editions de la Baconnière (1012 ex.) et 4) dans le même mois clandestinement par les éditions Gallimard (15 ex.). Seule l'édition de Lettres Françaises a été corrigée par l'auteur, les autres ont été publiées non corrigées à son insu. Cette oeuvre constitue un tournant dans la vie de St.-J. Perse, il renonce à sa carrière de diplomate pour se consacrer uniquement à la poésie : "J'habiterai mon nom fut ta réponse aux questionnaires du port" (Exil p. 30). Saint-John Perse, du vrai nom Alexis Leger (1887 - 1975), poète, écrivain et diplomate français, lauréat du prix Nobel de littérature en 1960. Sa poésie, en versets, se caractérise souvent par un hermétisme mais aussi par une puissante évocation d'images, visions et sentiments. Les "Cahiers du Rhône" ont été fondés en 1942 par Albert Béguin, dans l'idée de créer en ces temps les plus tragiques un refuge de la pensée libre et de permettre aux poètes résistants français de publier leurs textes. Nom de l'ancien possesseur (Montandon), daté Lausanne 1947, sur la page du faux-titre (crayon). Excellent état, avec le fragile papier de protection transparent en parfait état. Français 1942.
