VG, stapled, in orig. illus. ivory wrapper. xviii, 111 p.; 21 cm. (Exeter medieval English texts) Cover: detail from Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, MS 242 f.28v.(c.1300) In 86 sections, with notes and glossary. From Introduction: `A record of Julian's revelations exists in two forms: 1, a shorter account to be found in British Museum, Additional Manuscripts No.33790; 2, a longer version three copies of which exist, Paris, Bibliotheque National, Fonds Anglais No.40 (to be abbreviated P), and British Museum, Sloane Manuscripts No.2499 and No.3705 (to be abbreviated S1 and S2). It is generally agreed that the shorter version was written first and that the longer one takes into account Julian's growth in understanding of her revelations which, she tells us, took place for nearly twenty years after her initial experiencing of them. This longer account thus refers to the years 1373 to 1393 and must postdate them, but beyond this there is no evidence of the actual date of composition. The three manuscripts of the longer version were written in a later period than that to which they refer. S1 has been chosen as copy text for this edition because its language is much closer to fourteenth-century English than that of P. It is sometimes messy and carelessly written, and it has some awkward but not impossible readings.' (p. vii-viii) -- `The text of this edition is based on S1 and is conservative. The abbreviations in the manuscript, which are usual and need no comment, have been silently expended, and obvious dittography has been emended without comment. This edition has tried to preserve the sense indicated by what punctuation there is, but it is repunctuated in the interests of clarity and of the nature of Julian's book.' (p. x-xi). Binding is Paperbound.
