Monks Eleigh is a small village 4 miles East of Lavenham, and just like Lavenham reached its peak of prosperity in the 14th and 15th centuries through the cloth and wool trades. The author Arthur Francis Northcote was born on 2 November 1852, one of the sons of Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh but as not the first son went into the church. He was Canon of St Edmundsbury and Ipwich as well as Rector of Monks Eleigh between 1900 and 1932. He was a very scholarly and knowledgeable man. This tome is his book and is the best and only authoritative history of the village. At the time of listing i could not find another copy for sale on the net. As Monks Eleigh is only a village and this a nice looking book it looks like it may have been funded by the author himself and would not have been that many printed.

Kirk)."Boydell's Graphic illustrations &c." must not be confused with their "Collection of prints, from pictures painted for the purpose of illustrating the dramatic works of Shakspeare," London, 1803, two large folios containing larger plates (100, including the portraits of the King and Queen prefixed, and the two title-vignettes) most of which are entirely different from these smaller platesPlates, dated 1791-1803, are mainly by R.
