Hardcover. Condición: Poor. The pages are tight with light foxing throughout. There is a Biblical vine foldout next to the title page. it measures 11" x 7.5". The top edge is missing a piece approximately 3" x 7" and I don't know how much further is would have gone. The top part of the tree goes to 1,000 A.D. Former owner name on the front free end paper. The covers are very loose, but are still attatched.

Dr. Burgess, Lord Bishop of St. David's in Answer to his Lordship's "Protestant Catechism", by the Rev. John Milner DD FSA with considerable emendations by the author. Pocket-sized hardback in brown cloth boards with blind tooling, and gilt lettering to spine. Tanned endpapers. Frontispiece portrait of author, title page with illustration and Gothic lettering, title page proper, Preface, Contents, these together numbering [x] pages, then the text which is paginated 3, 28 [these recto/verso], 29-494. The binding is tight although slightly cracked at front hinge, the text clean and clear. The boards are rubbed with age, corners bumped, spine slightly damaged at top and base, but the book is in surprisingly good condition for its age.

Pagination erratic at the start, but matches other copies. In the original paper covered boards with the remains of a printed label to the spine. Boards are worn and stained. The front board is very nearly detached, it is holding on with just one cord. Pages lightly browned throughout, some spotting and staining. Title page more browned from contact with plate 10 which was acting as the frontispiece. The plates are all spotted and stained, also the boards. Page edges are untrimmed. Modern bookplates to the front end papers. Book.

Contemporary calf, with red label on spine and author's surname lettered in gilt. *Milner's 'The End of Religious Controversy' was originally conceived in 1801 as a refutation of Porteus's 'Brief Confutation of the Chief Errors of the Church of Rome', but was not published until 1818. This rare pocket edition was issued for 'The Catholic Book Society' which was officially titled 'The Catholic Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge throughout Ireland'. No printer is given, but 5 Essex Bridge was also the address of the printer and publisher William Joseph Battersby in 1830. This copy with the bookseller's ticket of Stephen Moore, 45 Paul St. Cork.* Binding worn with joints cracked but holding, some margin wear and tears to three leaves but with no loss of meaning, otherwise a very good copy without any library stamps, inscriptions or other markings.
