Paris [1931], Libraire Gallimard. Sitff wrs., 254p., paper a bit browned, as usual, frontis map of Vietnam, glossary and index of Vietnamese words used in the text, 12. x 18.9 cm., French text, clean & solid copy.FIRST EDITION LTD 580 COPIES *** *** *** . . . A LIMITED NUMBERED FIRST EDITION OF 580 COPIES . . . . . A PRIMARY RESOURCE ON NARRATIVE ON VIETNAM . . This 1930's primary work covers the author & his wife's sojourn to Vietnam. They visits Saigon, Hue and Tonkin [Hanoi & the north]. . The work consists of their astute and keen insight to the ways and life of the Annamites, and essentially "The Vietnamese People." their habits, food, languid life-style, the sultry weather, dress, attitudes, and the ways in which they [both the French & Vietnamese] relate to each other. . The work is fascinating in that the authors are fascinated with Vietnam, its people and 'exotic' ways. They make efforts to dig deeper into the life of the people, their beliefs, superstitions and obligations to the ceremonies of death and manners. . The couple also have much to say about the King, his live in Hue and his role in the lives of the people. . It is also clear this couple had an excellent vocabulary and understanding of a large number of Vietnamese words, ergo the lengthy glossary of terms explained to the French reader who would not be familiar with this language. . The work covers the couple's journey in Vietnam from May 1928 through September 1930, nearly two years journey and a leisurely visit to Vietnam, far beyond the usual tourist, therefore this work reflects the thoughtful insights and investigation of the Vietnamese far and beyond the 'superficial' tourist visit on a limited time schedule and budget. . In that case, the work contributes much to the knowledge of Vietnam and the Vietnamese from the South, central and northern districts, with focus on real details. . LIMITED NUMBERED FIRST EDITION: The edition is Limited & Numbereed per the colophon, however, this copy does not have a number and is 'out of sequence.' . *** CONDITION: The work is bound in original wrappers, covers are a bit "dusty," the pages are a bit "toned," as usual, but is not brittle or soiled. The work is solidly bound, many pages are uncut, as issued. ***.
