Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 253 pages. Dame Nellie Melba (1861-1931) was one of the most famous sopranos of her time. Born in Australia, Melba began her t raining in Melbourne but moved to Europe in 1882 to start her car eer. She found success in Brussels as Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto and was soon well known throughout the continent's opera houses. She debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1893. Her re pertoire extended over twenty-five roles, and she was regarded as unmatched in ten of these, continuing to perform throughout her life, in concert recitals as well as in opera, to great acclaim, and becoming one of the earliest modern 'celebrities'. In this au tobiography, published in 1925, Melba describes her childhood and her journey from the 'great Australian Bush' to the bright light s of the European and American stage, while also giving a colourf ul, first-hand account of the world of opera.

Chambers is not mentioned in Dame Nellie Melba s entry in the Oxford DNB. She met him in London in 1895, and their affair ended for unknown reasons in 1904. It is clearly the notorious affair in whose fame Chambers rejoiced to the last , according to Somerset Maugham s devastating assessment of the man in A Writer s Notebook (1946). Harry de Windt gives a markedly kinder account of Chambers in his My Note-Book at Home and Abroad (1923). The recipient of this letter is Osma Mary Dorothy Allhusen (1877-1965), wife of Conservative MP Augustus Henry Eden Allhusen (1867-1825) of Stoke Court, Buckinghamshire. 2pp, 12mo. Nineteen lines of text. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once. Signed C Haddon Chambers . His reply has been delayed by absence from town. It is extremely kind of you to invite me to Stoke Court & I should so much like to come to you - but alas! I shant be in England on 8th July according to present arrangements. He suggests a visit sometime in the Autumn . He is going to New York to produce Passers By" in September, but expect to be home at the end of October. .

Folded twice. Signed 'C Haddon Chambers'. Begins: Dear Watson, / I wish you would oblige an old friend by including two items in your notes. In the first place the new play in four acts which I wrote during my recent visit to New York is not & never was by me called "A Comedy of Manners." Such a title never occurred to me & I have no idea of the origin of the report. I have not yet decided on a title for the play. The letter concludes with news of a translation into German of his Tyranny of Tears , to be produced on the 16th April at the Deutsche Volkstheater in Vienna .

[No date or place, but almost certainly Sydney, NSW, 1902]. 2 pp. manuscript in ink on an octavo-size bifolium of Melba's personalised stationery with the singer's embossed monogram NM in blue and gold at the head of the first side; addressed to a Mrs. Featherstonhaugh and signed at the foot of the second side 'Yours sincerely, Nellie Melba'; mounted open on a section cut from an album page; clean and legible. Internal references suggest this note in the hand of the great Australian operatic soprano Nellie Melba (born Helen Porter Mitchell, 1861-1931) was almost certainly written by her in Sydney in 1902, during her first return visit to Australia from Europe. 'Dear Mrs. Featherstonhaugh, I am so sorry I have been unable to see anything of the girls: but when singers' throats go wrong everything goes wrong & I have not been allowed to talk - I am obliged to go to the harbour today with the Rawsons otherwise I should have been so glad to have had a little chat. I shall hope to see you on my return. Yours sincerely, Nellie Melba. My love to the girls.' In this note, "the Rawsons" could refer to the Mackay, Queensland family whom Melba had befriendedduring her brief and unhappy marriage to Charles Armstrong in the early 1880s; just as likely, though, it is a reference to Sir Harry Holdsworth Rawson (1843-1910), who was appointed Governor of New South Wales in 1902, and his wife Florence. Provenance: Autograph album compiled by Jane Emma Murphy (Balcombe) (1854?1924), "The Briars," Mornington, Victoria (Australia); àBeckett family, Melbourne (by descent).
