The story of the Wahi and district gold mines is a fascinating one, beginning with the discovery of the Martha Reef in 1878 and concluding with the closing of the Matha Mine in 1952, by which time gold valued at 28 milllion pounds had been extracted. Local historian Bert McAra tells the story of the Martha mine and the many others in the Waihi district in chronological order, the personalities of the mining days and of life on the gold fields. Many years after the Martha mine close new technology and mining methods saw the mine re-opened as an open cast working and production contines there today. 348 pages including four appendices, mining terms glossary and index, 96 b/w photos including portraits, 12 drawings or plans, e/paper plans of Waihi goldfields. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+ with light bumping to corners, tiny ink name date top corner FFEP, text block otherwise excellent.
