hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Dustjacket. 1st edition. New York. 1969. May 1966. Knopf. 1st Borzoi Edition. Very Good. No Dustjacket. Translated from the Spanish by John B. Hughes & Others. 433 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Muriel Nasser . keywords: Literature Translated Argentina Latin America. FROM THE PUBLISHER - This volume contains three novels and four shorter pieces of fiction by the distinguished Argentine writer Eduardo Mallea. The novels are FIESTA IN NOVEMBER, ALL GREEN SHALL PERISH, and CHAVES; the novellas and stories are Anguish,' The Lost Cause of Jacob Uber,' The Heart's Reason,' and The Shoes.' Each is of surpassing interest in itself; together, the seven stories present a panoramic view of Mallea's writing over a period of more than three decades. In his Introduction to this book, John B. Hughes says: Mallea's fundamental concern as a writer and the core of his art are based upon man's conflict with himself, his inner drama'; what he has called in a recent essay the inner war.' This is extended from within the individual to man's conflict with nature and society, the battle of the sexes, and the writer's struggle for meaning and expression. Baldly stated, the effort to communicate, to go beyond oneself, to love, is committed to a losing' battle with spiritual isolation and stagnation, man's capacity for self-destruction and the destruction of others in an alien' and corrosive world. Like their creator, the central characters of Mallea's fiction struggle with all the means at their disposal to transcend their fate': themselves. In each, hope is pitted against despair, life against death, immanent charity' against betrayal.' The final outcome is never really in doubt. Sooner or later, they,' and by implication we,' are all losers.' Individual losses' along the way may be large or small but they are nonetheless losses.' Victories' are won at great cost, are in some obscure way defeats. Mallea's characters are alive to the extent that they are aware of their plight and struggle against it. Above all, they are alive to the extent that they are capable of suffering. The capacity to suffer as men and women is equated with authenticity and, as such, emerges as the supreme human value in Mallea's art. This is a grim truth' for a writer to confront honestly, hopefully, and with compassion-in the best sense, naïvely-over a period of forty years. But this is precisely what Mallea has done since the publication of his first book of stories in 1926 through the more than thirty volumes-novels, essays, plays, stories, and novellas-which go to make up his published works thus far. It is this specific moral-esthetic commitment which makes him unique in Argentina and in contemporary Latin American literature.' . FIESTA IN NOVEMBER was first published in Spanish, under the title Fiesta en Noviembre, by Club del Libra A.L.A., Buenos Aires, in 1938. It was later published in Spanish by Losada, Buenos Aires, in 1944 and again in 1949. It first appeared in English in an anthology entitled Fiesta in November, published by Houghton Muffin Company in 1942. It was later included in the anthology The World's Best, published by The Dial Press in 1950. ALL GREEN SHALL PERISH was first published in Spanish, under the title Todo Verdor Perecera, by Espasa-Calpe, Buenos Aires, in 1941, and reissued by them in 1945 and 1951. It was published by Agullar, Madrid, in 1952. A Brazilian edition was published in Portuguese by Editôra O Globo, Pôrto Alegre, in 1949; an Italian edition, by Bompiani, Milan, in 1956; and a German edition, by Nymphenburger Verlagshandlung, Munich, in 1964. CHAVES was first published in Spanish by Losada, Buenos Aires, in 1953. A French edition was published by Librairie Gallimard in 1964. ANGUISH was first published in Spanish as La angustia, in the magazine La Revista de Occidente, numbers CXXX and CXXXI. It then appeared in La ciudad junta al rio inmovil, a collection of short stories by Mallea published by Sur, Bucnos Aires, in 1936. This volume was published again by Anaconda, Buenos Aires, in 1934, and by Editorial Sudamericana, Buenos Aires, in 1954. THE LOST CAUSE OF JACOB UBER was first published in Spanish as La causa perdida de Jacobe Uber in La ciudad junto al rio inmovil. It also appeared in the volume Todo Verdor Perecera. It was first published in English in the Kenyon Review Vol. 6, No. 4, Autumn 1944. THE HEART'S REASON was first published in Spanish as La razön humana in the magazine Realidad. It was included in the volume Todo Verdor Perecera and then appeared in a collection of stories by Mallea entitled La razon humana, published by Losada, Buenos Aires, in 1959. It was included in the anthology Veintidos Cuentistas, published by Centurion, Buenos Aires, in 1963. The English version was included IN SPANISH STORIES AND TALES, edited by Harriet de Onis and published by Alfred A. Knopf in 5954, by Pocket Books, Inc., in 1956, and in a Spanish version of this anthology published by Washington Square Press in 1961.
