Hardcover. Condición: Fair. 1st Edition. A fair copy of Vol II in the original publisher's boards with inscription at the fep dated August 11 1838. The writing is a bit difficult but it looks to be to John Beecroft (1790-1854) who became Acting Governor of Fernando Po in 1830. The inscription says 'John Beecroft a present from his friend McGregor Laird Esq'. The binding was designed to be temporary and has not worn well. Part of the spine with the title label is preserved inside the book. The boards are intact. The pastedown endpapers have what look like the remains of wax blobs stuck to them. Contents: frontispiece with loose guard; title; contents list pp iii-vii; text 1-351 - End of Mr Oldfield's Journal with one further plate; 353-411; half title to Appendix; text 415-420; vocabulary 421-447, End. Contents are very clean. Pages are untrimmed and there is some foxing, particularly at the page edges. The frontispiece is very spotty, but the second plate just has a couple of browned areas in the margin. Pages 237/8 and 239/40 have lost the top corner; pp 389-392 have lost the bottom corner; and there is a little tearing in the top gutter circa p 320. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Inscribed by Author(s).

First Edition. Octavo (22.5cm). Two volumes half-bound in later dark brown leather and marbled paper, top edges gilt; [xvi],451,[1]pp; [viii],447,[1]pp; 7 aquatint plates. Frontispiece from vol. I bound into vol. II. Bookplate of William F. Ross in each volume. Sound but externally rubbed and bumped, prelims and final leaves foxed, else clean: Very Good. After Richard Lander identified the mouth of the Niger River in 1830, Macgregor Laird prepared an expedition to explore and trade along the river. He constructed two paddle steam ships, the Quorra and the Alburkah, for the purpose. The expedition was an unprofitable disaster; 39 of the 48 white members of the original crew died, largely of malaria. However, the ships proved feasible, and Lander spent the next two decades as a successful shipbuilder. Not in Abbey. HOWGEGO L7.
