Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Clark, LaVerne Harrell [photos] Ilustrador. 1st Edition. DARK NIGHT OF THE BODY: D. H. LAWRENCE'S THE PLUMED SERPENT, L.D. Clark, illustrated with photos by LaVerne Harrell Clark, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, first edition and first printing (per custom of the publisher), 1964. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and photos are in fine condition with no dogears, tears, or marks. Tiny spot on the fore-edge. There is no book plate nor signature of prior owner. Not a remainder or library book. The red cloth boards are in very good condition (light bumping at top of spine, a few spots on the spine). The dust jacket is in very good condition (some age-toning inside). 9 1/4 x 6 ¼, 157 pages, 17 ounces XX [From the jacket flaps] Few novels of this century have been attacked more virulently or praised more enthusiastically than THE PLUMED SERPENT by D. H. Lawrence. It has been condemned as sententious, a bad book and a regrettable performance, and the most ambitious failure among all Lawrence's novels. Yet it has also been praised as comparable in splendor to Kubla Khan or Salammbo, or, better perhaps, to the paintings of Gauguin, as a work whose prose is flexible as a whiplash, uneven and harmonious as breakers rolling upon a beach, and the sound is music. A work which can excite such vigorous disapproval and such strong enthusiasm would certainly seem to merit thorough study, and DARK NIGHT OF THE BODY is the result of such analysis. In lucid and easy-reading prose, with impeccable but unobtrusive scholarship, Dr. L. D. Clark examines THE PLUMED SERPENT as a work of art. He analyzes the novel's structure and organization, and examines the novelist's narrative techniques and his use of symbolism. He clarifies Lawrence's position in the tradition of sensuous religious poetry, in particular comparing him to San Juan de la Cruz. He places THE PLUMED SERPENT clearly in the Christian and pagan tradition of the seeking soul; and he briefly surveys other works by Lawrence which contribute to a better understanding of this novel: in particular, St. Mawr, The Woman Who Rode Away, The Princess, and Mornings in Mexico. Furthermore, he analyzes in detail the methods by which Lawrence utilized his personal experience, his observations, and his reading in creating his fiction. Chronicling both Lawrence's experiences in the United States and in Mexico and his relationship with North Americans and Mexicans, Dr. Clark shows the effect of people and place on his work. And finally, he looks into Lawrence's knowledge and understanding of the aboriginal American culture and the ways he uses his knowledge in this novel. Collecting material for this book, Dr. Clark traveled through all parts of Mexico that the subject touched: Mexico City, Oaxaca. Chapala, the West Coast. He went everywhere Lawrence had been, to his dwelling places and to spots identifiable as settings in his fiction.
