Rebound in modern half blue buckam, blue cloth over boards, gilt titles to front and spine, original paper front cover bound in at rear; modern endpapers; [xii],320pp; 104 plates, including both diagrams and half-tone photographs. Ex-library Yale University Museum, with stamps to t.p., front wrapper, and text. A straight, sturdy copy, some spotting to top edge, minor toning to text leaves but plates clean and bright: Very Good. A chronicle of Langley and Manly's work on the Great Aerodrome, an experimental manned flying machine. Though it failed two flying tests in 1903, work on the Aerodrom helped Manley develop the Manly-Balzer engine, the first purpose-designed aircraft engine. Langley was also the third secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge Vol. 27, No. 3.

Some marginal sun-fading of wrappers and light soiling, especially at top edge; otherwise a very good tight clean copy.I doubt that it was ever opened. Some silverfish damage to lower inside edge of title page. Many pages still uncut. With a green board (mottled on spine) to wrap around with the title in gilt on spine, not quite large enough however, hence soiling to top edges.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Handsomely bound in modern three quarter cloth with marbeled boards. Front wrapper, which is bound in, has some professional repair, as does the first few leaves. 101 illustrations (complete). Two parts, 329 pages.10 x 13 inches. Langley (1834-1906) was a precursor to the Wright Brothers. His Aerodrome No. 6 flew in an unmanned flight 4200 feet at 30 miles per hour on November 28, 1896. This success led him to convince the U.S. War Department to fund a unsuccessful $50,000 research project into manned flight.
