Ejemplar firmado
Small 4to. One-page, approximately 60 words, in part: "I do not feel that I am a very prominent Confederate. I only tried to do my duty, as my God given conscience dictated for[:] "Of all our race, â tis note the fate, / To shine among the princely great. / Let none repine at this decree, / For good, and happy, all may be." Signed "Very truly yours, / Lamar Fontaine." Signed again at the bottom of the page "Very truly yours, / Lamar Fontaine / Lyon, Miss." A native of Texas and veteran of the Mexican War, Fontaine served in the Confederate army in Virginia (claiming authorship of "All Quiet Along the Potomac," written after a comrade was killed by a sniper early in the conflict, one of many claims of service he made which may or may not be true); the poem, generally attributed to Ethel Lynn Beers, was set to music by composers on both sides and became one of the most popular Civil War songs. Written in a somewhat flowery, neat hand. Very good.
