Featured in Grier at the highest tier for having significant lesbian characters and action, marking it integral for any collection of lesbian literature. Grier states in her book about the novel: "This is a novel-length work made up of four long short stories, which properly should not be read separately except for the first story, which was originally published in 1960." In a review for The Ladder, she said of the novel: "If ever a novel could rightly be termed Gay, this is it," she wrote of King's first book, The Day We Were Mostly Butterflies (1964), describing the book as "High camp in full flight."
