Leather bound hardback. The book is bound in rubbed embossed leather with marbled endpaper and gilt dentelles and page edges, the hinges are a little weak. The plates are tipped in, there are some marginal fingermarks and some slight marginal brownin g throughout. Illustrated, 22 plates with accompanying text.

Leather. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. A beautiful and scarce collection of illustrated plates of Goethe's Female characters from William Kaulbach. Illustrated frontispiece with portrait of Goethe. Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805 -1874) was a German painter, noted mainly as a muralist, but also as a book illustrator. His murals decorate buildings in Munich from Louis I ambition to turn Munich into the German Athens. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. The women studied are Adelheid, Gretchen, Leonora and many more, all complimented by explanatory texts from G. H. Lewes. In a morocco binding. Externally, very smart with blindstamped detailing to board. Both hinges reinforced with cloth tape. Internally, it has been rebacked, preserving the original boards. Generally firmly bound with pages bright and clean, though slight spotting to first few pages. Very Good. book.

Quarter Vellum. Condición: Very Good. von Kaulbach, Wilhelm Ilustrador. First Edition. No date but this is the first printing of this translation from 1925 in the Broadway Translations series. The corners of the beige boards are a little bumped and slightly rubbed. The Vellum spine has a little edge rubbing and fading with the title label on the spine a little damaged at the edges with slight fading to the gold title lettering. Top of page edges browned with light spotting. Previous owner's 1967 book plate to front pastedown but the marbled endpapers are otherwise unmarked. Earlier' owner's initials in ink to reverse of front free endpaper. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Contains an introduction by William Rose, Caxton's text of The History of Reynard the Fox modernized by William Swan Stallybrass, Physiologus translated with an introduction by James Carlill, a Glossarial Index and Notes to Reynard by Stallybrass and illustrations by Kaulbach. No jacket.

All pages printed within a two-coloured frame. Bound in full red leather with blindtooling on both covers and a gilt title '' Goethe Gallery '' on spine and front cover. All edges gilt. Apart from some slight traces of wear at the binding an excellant copy without any stains. Finely bound and preserved early example of a literature text illustrated by original photographs of art works which accompany the text.
