Author, art historian Ludwig Justi (1876 - 1957), director of the National Gallery (1909 - 1933) held particular sympathies towards the Romantics. 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich's (1774 - 1840) works, by the 1920s his paintings were admired by the Expressionists, and, in the 1930s and early 1940s inspired Surrealists and Existentialists.
