Royal octavo, softbound (stiff gray wrappers), viii + 73 pp. Good, with edgewear that includes light chipping to wrappers. From Translator's Foreword: It is a curious fact that Poland, often spoken of as a nation of artists, has produced little of outstanding artistic perfection in the field of the drama. Polish dramatic literature lacks the richness and variety found, for example, in France, in England, and in the Scandinavian countries. This applies with peculiar force to the drama written prior to the nienteenth century. One must fully agree with the distinguished American Slavist, Professor George R. Noyes, who says in his introdcution to The Poems of Jan Kochanowski, "The Polish drama as a whole is of small account until the end of the eighteenth century." Kochanowski's notable tragedy, The Dismissal of the Grecian Envoys, written in 1578, and the first original drama in the Polish language, does not seriously call into question this statement. The most important achievements in Polish dramatic writing came only during the nineteenth century. In comedy, Count Aleksander Fredro (1793 - 1876), achieved a well-rounded completeness. Juljusz Slowacki and, toward the close of the century, Stanislaw Wyspianski, made the greatest contributions to tragedy. Both left on all their work the indelible mark of their brilliant, if not always well-balanced, individualities. In the case of Slowacki, his dramas are so inextricably tied up with the elements of his artistic temperament that any attempt at their critical review requires an understanding of the author's mind. Juljusz Slowacki, born as were Chopin and Poe, in 1809, was possessed of a highly nervous and delicate physique. He died in 1849, the year in which, by a strange coincidence, Chopin and Poe also died. Brilliant and impressionable, from an early age he displayed unusual gifts for music for drawing, and for foreign languages. In his Wilno home, surrounded by refinement and luxury, he grew rapidly, indeed too rapidly. Literature, Drama, Poland, Polish, European History. aslic.

Unclipped dust jacket is lightly chipped at head and heel, else good. Juliusz Slowacki (1809 ? 1849) was a Polish Romantic poet. He is considered one of the "Three Bards" of Polish literature ? a major figure in the Polish Romantic period, and the father of modern Polish drama. His works often feature elements of Slavic pagan traditions, Polish history, mysticism and orientalism. The main plot of the work revolves around the journey through Siberia undertaken by the titular character, a youth named Anhelli, and his guide Shaman, leader of a Siberian tribe. Anhelli was chosen by Shaman from Polish exiles as the redeemer because of his "purity and sinlessness" and he was to be subjected to an initiation by taking part in a journey to see the suffering of the nation.
