Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Popular edition of the second of four volumes of the series "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War." The series grew out of articles published the 1880s in Century Magazine, written by participants in the war itself. These first-hand accounts, written by generals down to captains, along with civilians and wives, provide a remarkable history of the war years, along with insights into the character of the men who led the war effort. Another edition of these four volumes published by Castle in the 1950s had different subtitles for each volume. This edition was apparently published in the 1980s and 1990s, also by Castle, but with new subtitles on the dust jacket for each volume. (The subtitles are not on the facsimile reproduced text.) 760 pages, with hundreds of engraved illustrations and 53 maps. 6¾ x 9½ inches. With the exception of a very small tear to the dust jacket at the upper right front corner, the book is in nearly new condition. Sales tax will be added to all California orders.

Soft cover. Condición: VG. 1884 - 1888, pages printed in double columns, profusely illustrated with portraits, maps, diagrams, and drawings, gathered from issues of The Century Magazine. Series was introduced in Volume 28, No. 6, October, 1884, with segments published consecutively through Volume 35, No. 6, April, 1888, 42 segments in all, in what was a tremendous publishing coup by the editors of Century, who would also publish the sections as a 4-volume set, and an 8-volume Grant - Lee Edition, and also a 32 - part set bound in publisher's wraps. The present set, however, is the original articles gathered from the monthly issues of Century Magazine, 1884 - 1888. The segments from each volume are housed separately in archival bags along with the title-pages from the bound volumes, and the contents pages listing all the Battles and Leaders of the Civil War segments. We have additionally included a preliminary segment, Lights and Shadows of Army Life, by George F. Williams, from the October, 1884 issue, which, according to the editors, sets the stage for the upcoming series. This set is certainly among the very best works ever done on the Civil War.
