Laminated illustratedwrappers, 8vo, 21 cm, 36 pp, ills. From a laid in newspaper cutting: "A chance discovery at an auction in London led to a new book tracing the history of a Bedfordshire village. A Victorian Family at Houghton Conquest 1838-1878 was prompted when historian Simon Houfe came across an album of Victorian drawings at Sotheby's in London three years ago. He recognised the artist as the Rev John William Burgon and saw that many of the drawings were of Bedfordshire villages, including about 20 of Houghton Conquest and its residents. Mr Houfe said: "The auctioneer did not know who the artist was or where the drawings were done, but I recognised them and saw some of them dated back to the 1840s. "As a result a number of local people were able to buy some of the pictures at the auction and then bring them back to Bedfordshire. We decided to put them all together in a book which told their story." Mr Houfe, who lives in Ampthill and is a retired magazine editor, was also asked to write some text. His words and the pictures were then added to a history of the village written by the Rev Burgon 130 years earlier, when he used to live in Houghton Conquest. Mr Houfe said: "It is particularly unusual that these are portraits of ordinary people, and not aristocrats. Although photography did exist at this time, these drawings were done 30 years or so before it became popular. "There are also a number of people still living in Houghton Conquest or in the near area whose great-great grandfathers and grandmothers are in the book, which brings it up to the present day." Fine.
