Full Calf. Condición: Very Good. Signed by author as "L. Sterne" in ink in two places --- first pages of Vol. 5 and 7. This was done in an effort to combat piracy of the work. Notwithstanding the mixed state and two different publishers, all the volumes match perfectly, meaning they have the same dimensions, and thus form a cohesive set. And all the volumes are very early -- the stated 4th edition of the first two volumes appeared the year following the first edition. As not unusual, what are treated as different editions would today more commonly be treated as different printings of the same edition. Four or five of the volumes are first editions, we would note. We can't be 100 percent certain volume 9 is, as it is lacking Sterne's signature, which he is known to have done in the first of this volume as he did in 5 and 7, but obviously, he could have neglected to do so with some copies. 12mo. 16 by 10 cm. [7], 179, 182, 202, 1-146, 156-220, 150, 155, [1], 160, 156, [6], 145 pp. Frontis plates appear in Vols. 1 and 3. Half titles appear in Vols. 4, 5, 6 and 9. Vol. 2 and 8 have neither a frontis nor a half-title. Early editions can have half-titles in Vol. 2, but that doesn't mean that this particular edition calls for one. Volume 3 contains marbled paper pasted down to pages 169 and 170. Vol. 4 has no page 147-155, as these were deliberately omitted to support Sterne's humorous assertion that he had torn out a chapter, and so this copy is exactly as it should be with respect to this. Vol. 7 contains Errata on verso of title page. All volumes with an armorial bookplate depicting four cranes pasted onto the FEP. Condition: spines darkened, vertically striated from use. Chipping and/or roughness of most spine heads. Spine bases with little chipping but they have staining, or are darker than the rest of spine. Hinges/joints tending to have some light cracking at top and bottom. Several joints cracked. Several boards with short abrasions -- loss of the leather surface. Gilt numbers on spine dulled or gilt partly or fully vanished in a few volumes, but all numbers remain readable. Edges with rubbing or shelfwear, as one might expect typically, and not an inordinate amount, in our view. Endpapers with bands of browning around edges. Foxing of first few and last few leaves in most of the volumes. Prelim. blank leaves of Vol. 4 dampstained. Overall, though, the leaves are clean, and text blocks remain tight. Notwithstanding the flaws we have set forth, we find the set still attractive, the flaws ones to be in keeping with a contemporary calf binding of this vintage, and we might even say appropriate for such a set, and we ourselves don't think any restoration work is needed -- we would choose to live with the set "as is". Mixed state. Vols. 1 and 2: 4th Edition. Vols. 3, and we presume also 4: 2nd Edition. Vol. 5 to 8: 1st Editions; Vol. 9 probably a first edition.
