This is Volume I only. Volume I covers Chinese Art from the Neolithic Period through the T'ang Dynasty and also Sino-Siberian bronzes. Each plate has detailed annotation. Uncommon and a lovely copy. VG (light wear to boards; light tanning to spine. slipcase may have rubbing & worn area to front, lower edge).

Photo is of a previous copy in our collection, though, very similar in condition. The second volume of a two-volume set of "selected art objects from the Charles Bain Hoyt collection. . The stress is on ceramics, although this one contains paintings, sculpture, lacquerwork, and silver as well." (preface) The annotated and illustrated catalogue addresses 151 pieces. VG+/VG (light scuffs & scratches to cloth. speckled foxing to textblock w/ some faint remnants to pg edges. slipcase has sunning to edges & scratches).

Clean and tight in original beige linen binding with red leather spine label with gilt lettering in green paper covered board slipcase with printed paper label at spine, unevenly faded on one side. Volume 1 features 163 plates with descriptions of the items; many tipped in colour plates as well as black and white illustrations. Charles Bain Hoyt (1889-1949) was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was the son of Col. James J. Hoyt, a Union Army officer of the Civil War and descendant of the theologian Jonathan Edwards. Hoyt traveled extensively in many parts of the world, particularly in the Orient. He devoted himself to collecting Chinese pottery and porcelain pieces, mostly of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. The Hoyt collection, most of which is housed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, includes Chinese and Korean ceramics, Chinese sculpture and bronzes and metal objects, paintings and prints, and other items. A very valuable reference on Chinese art and antiquities.
