The text, based on a profound knowledge of theoretical and practical politics, serves two important purposes. The first is to describe our political system and the character and functions of its two strongest parties - Democratic and Republican. The second is to distill from our fabulous political history the variables that appear to be the most influential in determining which side, in an election contest, will win or lose. Out of the development of these related themes the author develops a truly modern and informed point of view toward American party politics. The major function of any political party, says Dr. Hinderaker, is to win elections. But the first responsibility of a major party is to stay alive, so that it can go on to win important elections. Systematically, and with great insight, Dr. Hinderaker shows the several ways in which both may be served. Dr. Hinderaker's analysis of the importance of the party is particularly astute. He points out that the political party and the pressure group are the only organized institutions through which most people are able to participate in the American political process. After analyzing the function of the minor party, he proceeds to place the major party, the pressure group, and the minor party into relationship with one another, then all three into relationship with the government they either want to run or influence. PARTY POLITICS represents an original and fresh approach to the field of political science. It is important and pleasant reading, heightened by the inclusion of numerous cartoons, for anyone who wishes to know more of the ways and means by which national elections are won. An Associate Professor of Political Science at U.C.L.Å., Ivan Hinderaker is a former member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives, a former staff member of the Administrative Management Division of the U. S. Bureau of the Budget, and is presently Vice-Chairman of the Platform Committee of the California Republican State Central Committee. Professor Hinderaker is also the author of numerous articles in political-science publications and a book, Administrative Districts and Field Offices of the Minnesota State Government. He is co-editor of The Politics of California and a frequent contributor to the Los Angeles Times editorial page.
