[spine slightly turned, moderate dust-soiling to top edge, previous owner's signature on ffep; jacket shows minor surface wear, light soiling (mostly to rear panel)]. A multi-generational, multi-ethnic novel of Los Angeles, spanning the 1880's through World War II, "a story whose color, violence, and drama are equaled only by the history of Los Angeles itself." The authorial bio blurb on the jacket is a great joke, stating that Ms. Highland "was born in Shanghai, was a Van de Kamp's waitress, studied demotic Greek in Thessaloniki, and is a Rhodes scholar. Although she has published widely during her long and varied life, her many-faced personality has coalesced for the first time in the writing of [this novel]." 0-698-11202-4.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First Edition. One of three novels written by Carolyn See, her former professor and partner Mark Espey, and See's daughter, Carolyn, under the Monica Highland pseudonym. This historical novel, set in Los Angeles, follows a refugee from China, an immigrant from Mexico (Magdelena Ortiz), and a white transplant from the East Coast, from the 1880s to World War II. Both Lisa See and her mother Carolyn have written many popular and acclaimed novels. Espey wrote novels, literary criticism, and several bibliographies of decorative publisher's trade bindings. First edition (first printing). Very good in a very good, lightly spine-faded dust jacket with a small chip missing at the top of the spine. This copy was inscribed for Edgar Award-nominated writer Mark Schorr, by all three authors, each of whom signed as Monica Highland followed by their real names. The inscription references Schorr's main character, Simon "Red Diamond" Jaffe: "Someday the seductive granddaughter of Magdelena Ortiz will meet Simon Jaffee (sic) beneath the H in the Hollywood sign and then! Love from Monica /Carolyn See/H. | Monica Highland / Lisa See Kendall | Monica Highland / John Espey. A terrific inscription, referencing a character in the novel and the main character in another novel and signed in full by all three authors.
