Libro
Hardcover. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Maps Ilustrador. 1st. Few notorious felons are recalled by having their name applied for posterity to a significant area of land. The Mackenzie Country, in the central section of NZ's South Island (SI), inland and in the eastern lee of the Southern Alps, takes it name from the "sheeplifter" James Mackenzie who was charged with stealing 1000 sheep in South Canterbury in 1855. Apart from this indiscretion (perhaps not the only incident of its type), Mackenzie became a legendry figure in SI folk lore, as were his dogs and his explorations of the SI hinterland, being credited with discovering several passes across the Southern Alps. His trek with the stolen sheep ended when he was captured with them. He escaped that captivity and made his way to Lyttelton. Recaptured there he was sentenced to five year in prison. However, he spent only nine months there, escaping twice more, before being pardoned and released because the authorities believed he was subject to a miscarriage of justice. Little is know of Mackenzie after he sailed for Australia, probably in 1856, although the author in his chronological summary refers to the possibility of Mackenzie's "buried treasure."` Whatever, his name is forever enshrined in that desolate and isolated "country." Beattie's book is believed to be the first fully devoted to discovering the truth of the Mackenzie story, without destroying its legandry aspects. First edition of 1946, 113 pages including supplement with seven appendices plus index, six b/w photos, two maps. Brown hard covers with gilt front titles and rules are VG with few faint marks to front, first page appears to be removed but foillowing blank sheet has light ink name address at top, text block otherwise VG with few light creases to title page.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Journalist James Herries Beattie recorded southern Maori history for almost fifty years and produced many popular books and pamphlets. Traditional Lifeways of the Southern Maori is his most important work. This significant resource, which is based on a major field project Beattie carried out for the Otago Museum in 1920, was first published by Otago University Press in 1994 and is now available in this new edition.Beattie had a strong sense that traditional knowledge needed to be recorded fast. For twelve months, he interviewed people from Foveaux Strait to North Canterbury, and from Nelson and Westland. He also visited libraries to check information compiled by earlier researchers, spent time with Maori in Otago Museum recording southern names for fauna and artefacts, visited pa sites, and copied notebooks lent to him by informants. Finally he worked his findings up into systematic notes, which eventually became manuscript 181 in the Hocken Collections, and now this book.Editor Atholl Anderson introduces the book with a biography of Beattie, a description of his work and information about his informants. Beattie wrote a foreword and introduction to the Murihiku section, which are also included here. The new edition of the major field project undertaken by James Herries Beattie, edited by Athol Anderson. In 1920, Beattie interviewed people from Foveaux Strait to North Canterbury, and from Nelson and Westland, alongside reading earlier research, recording southern names for fauna and artefacts and visiting pa sites.
