Paris, H.J. Vieillard-Baron, 'Hemsterhuis platonicien', in XVIIIe siècle, VII, 1975, p. 129-146). (R.E. Stoddard, 'Hemsterhuis, bibliography', "The Book collector", vol. 50/2, n°13, p. 197).

4to (261 x 210 mm). (2) leaves, 31 pp., 3 folding plates with engravings of Hemsterhuis; engraved vignette on title, page 1, and page 31, all signed F. Hemsterhuis or F. H. inv. et fecit and J. V. Schley sculp. Conteporary boards, rubbed along spine and egdes. This is the only work of Hemsterhuis, which he seemingly had not bound by his binders Christiaan Micke or Thomas van Os - only one copy is known in a fine contemporary binding; see Storm van Leeuwen, F. Hemsterhuis' binders, in: The Book Collector, vol. 50 no. 2, London 2001. p. 203. - Stoddard no. 2.Theodoor de Smeth (1710-1772) was an Amsterdam banker and art lover who had collected an excellent collection of ancient gems. Hemsterhuis first writing Lettre sur une pierre antique from 1762 describes a gem cut from an amethyst of the De Smeth collection, a gem which he was able to acquire on the advice and through the intermediation of Hemsterhuis from Lorenz Natter (1705-1763), and which is shown on the title page of this short first publication. Both collections can be seen in the Royal Coin Cabinet in Den Haag.Like the publication of 1762, the present one about art in general and in a second part about sculpture - incorporating thoughts of Addison (On genius), Hume, Home, Montesquieu - has the form of a letter to de Smeth, as does the third, Lettres sur les desirs from 1770. It is quite possible that Hemsterhuis did not initially think of a publication, since the work was already completed in November 1765; a decision to publish it took him four years."The Lettre sur la scultpure is in line with an esthetic paganism that extends in Germany from Winckelmann [his Histoire de l'art chez les anciens was published in 1766, i. e. after H. has finished sur la sculpture. H. could not the German original. JD] into the twentieth century, and it is partly in the context of the 'tyranny of Greece of Germany' . two observations made in the Letter, - the tendency of the human mind to strive for a maximum of ideas in a minimum of time, and the blunting of our preception of beautiful objects by constant exposure to them - furnished the point of departure for Hemsterhuis next publication, the Lettre sur les désirs . The maximum-minimum formula became a leitmotiv of Hemsterhuis thought ." (Moenkemeyer, F. H., Boston 1975, p. 32ff.).
Edition in 8vo! 8vo (182 x 120 mm). 68 pp. Bound between a Th. Paine (1792) and an "Ouvrage posthume" of Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (1803?). Preromantic binding in full calf, joints starting. Covers and spine richly gilt and blindstamped.Stoddard 4b.Stoddard (p. 188) locates two copies of the Hemsterhuis: "There is a duodecimo edition [of Lettre sur l?homme .] that is to be found in all the usual libraries, but there is also an octavo edition located so far only at the BnF and Landesbibliothek Gotha" - but the online catalogue of Gotha mentions a duodecimo edition only.I found a second copy in Tresoar/Leeuwarden (signature: C 53086 kluis). This octavo edition is not supervised by Hemsterhuis but is a pirated edition. The date "1772" my be a fake. Obviously a rare book.

First edition8vo (leaves are 166 x 100 mm). 188 p., 1 folded plate, 2 blanks. Contemporary red morocco tooled in gilt by Thomas van Os. M2 is a cancel; the folding plate of the German edition, published by Hartknoch in the same year, is bound in at the end after M6 as in the KB copy at The Hague. Hinges and spine a bit rubbed. - Stoddard no. 11 (in: The Book Collector vol. 50/2). 450 copies were printed.Binding: See, J. St. van Eeuwen, Frans Hemsterhuis' binders . (same issue of The Book Collector ., pp. 202ff): "In the last quarter of the eighteenth century Thomas van Os was without any doubt the best binder in The Hague and probably in the whole of the Netherlands. His most beautiful bindings, like some for Hemsterhuis, have a frame of lacework on the covers with an undulating contour, which consists of arcs in different sizes, small leaves, fruits, birds and insects in a composition that is only symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal axes of the covers and is sometimes even totally asymmetrical. Thus van Os was the only Dutch binder of his time to translate the asymmetry of Rococco in terms of gold tooling. His technique stands the comparison with that of the best binders ." The bindings known to be made by van Os between 1778 and 1790 are all, except one, bound for Hemsterhuis. The little stamps on both covers of our binding show insects, birds, hares, even fishes.
Roger Stoddard, A Bibliographical List of Books by François Hemsterhuis (1721-1790) (The Book Collector 2001, 189-201), n°4a ; Wilson, Diderot sa vie son oeuvre, pp. 539-540.

[2 blank], X, 208 pp.First edition of the famous philosophical dialogues by Frans Hemsterhuis (1721-1790), probably the most original Dutch philosopher of the 18th century, who influenced Immanuel Kant and romanticism.
