Memoir of the youngest child of a well-educated Victorian Quaker household - the Thomas family of Baltimore. Includes an original photo of the author's father, James Carey Thomas (1833-1897), founder of Johns Hopkins. The author's sister was M. Carey Thomas, one of the founders of Bryn Mawr. Signed by the author on a special page at the front. Gray cloth with paper labels on spine and front cover, 335 pages. The book has some light external wear, sections from the dustjacket tipped onto the verso of the front free endpaper, recto of preliminary blank, and dedication page, book reviews tipped onto rear endpapers. In addition, there are handwritten notes taped onto the final blank and rear free endpaper concerning the relationship, both professional and friendly, between the author's family and that of the book's last owner, with a gift inscription by the writer of the notes to the book's most recent owner completing the reference. Pages within the book are very clean and free from markings, underlining, etc. The photo measures 6.5" x 4.25" and was taken at Walzl's Imperial Portrait Studios on Baltimore. . Signed by the Author. Association copy, donated to Branford College, Yale University, by Amelia Daggett Sheffield, whose father, John Daggett (1805-1885) published "Sketch of the History of Attleborough." After his death, Amelia edited his notes and in 1894, upon completion, published 'A Sketch of the History of Attleborough from its Settlement to its Division." This copy bears a bookplate from Yale with a presentation paste-down with dedications to include Joseph Earl Sheffield (1793-1882), great benefactor to Yale. Full-bound gray cloth, paste-down title labels on spine and front board, minimal wear at extremities, spine head is frayed with a 1/2 inch crack in the rear hinge, spine label has a small chip on one side, upper tips of four pages creased with minute tears, Branford College stamp lower corner rear free endpaper, tight, square, clean throughout.
