Describes the campaign to prevent Japanese forces from gaining a foothold on the Alaskan island chain during WWII. "In honor and memory of the men of the North Pacific Theater who died so that a continent might be free." Colodny fought with the Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War, became a historian and was active for his entire life in social justice movements. Hammett wrote detective novels.

An interesting piece of wartime work from the detective fiction author, whose background of Communism and tuberculosis had made enlisting problematic.

First Edition. Text was written by Army Corporal Dashiell Hammett and captions by Army Corporal Robert Colodny. Hammett transferred by the Army to the Aleutians in 1943, and while there wrote his history of the Aleutian Campaign against the Japanese. The Aleutian Islands were highly valued by the the Japanese during World War II, hoping to use them to launch attacks to take over Alaska and further attack the west coast of Canada and the USA. Near fine clean copy.
