In good condition, lightly aged, with one vertical crease. Stamped and postmarked, and addressed to 'Cyril Maude Esqre. | Redlap | Dartmouth. | Devon'. For more about Hambourg, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. He writes: 'My dear Cyril | I'm afraid the Chappell Piano is necessary for me, as however good a theatre piano, it would not be good enough for a performance at your "Grand Benefit." | Yours with best wishes | Mark Hambourg'. Maude's 'Birthday Benefit Matinée' took place for charity at the Haymarket Theatre, 24 April 1942. Hambourg performed three pieces: one by Chopin, one by Tchaikowsky, and one of his own compositions. A great success, the matinee also saw Maude's last performance, as Sir Peter Teazle opposite Vivien Leigh.

This copy is the New and Enlarged Edition. In the original pictorial paper-covered boards - but lacking quite a lot of the paper covering to the spine, tho the Title is still visible. Otherwise the book is Tight, Clean and Bright. Good Plus to VG, and inside VG with only the former owner's name written on the top of the front free endpaper, a small loss to the outer blank edge of page 59, but no other marks. 103 pp. Music notation examples/exercises, etc, throughout, and line drawings showing hand positioning, etc. Nice to have an Original example of this work by Mark Hambourg the celebrated pianist. Born: 1879 - Russia. Died: 1960 - Cambridge, England. Born into a musical family. His father, Mikhail Hambourg was a pianist and a teacher. Mark studied with his father, made his debut in Moscow in 1888, at age 9. Then he went to Vienna to study with the celebrated pedagogue Theodor Leschetizky. It was Leschetizky who prepared Hambourg for his Vienna debut in 1894 with the Wiener Philharmoniker under Hans Richter, playing Frédéric Chopin s First Piano Concerto. Mark Hambourg occupies a unique place in early 20th-century pianism, and was regarded by his contemporaries as an artist of the first rank. See Images. ; 8vo 8" - 10" tall.
